I am an international nursing student, Should I work in a hospital before graduation?

Published

I have passed the first semester of nursing school with hardship. English is my third language and I was intimidated by the nursing professors when they said words I didn't understand. The feelings led me to feel psychologically down and think I will not succeed in nursing. For example, in the Hygiene lecture, the professor kept mentioning the linen few times, and I had no idea what does the word mean. Anyway, I survived the first semester with the help of my caring husband. My husband is an American and he spent nights studying with me. Now Fall classes are coming soon, so I will be starting Med Surg and Psychatric nursing. I am thinking I better get a CNA job or a student nurse job before I graduate so I will be more familiar with hospital setting and the language. Shame on me I should have gotten a hospital job right when summer have started but I was hesitating because I thought I am petite and I may be required to carry heavy things as a CNA. I didn't give myself a chance to try before assuming the job.

Now, please the nursing school faculty keep telling me I should not work at all. I was and I still work in the campus on a computer lab for 20 hours and the job is not very demanding which means I can do lot of studying there. I am thinking now I should also work for 10 to 12 hours a week as CNA in a hospital so I can gain some experience. I am trying to be a unique nurse with my cultural background and the languages I speak. In addition, with CNA experience prior to graduation may help me to be a better candidate for an RN job.

What could you advise me please?

Any experience is good experience and exposure to the American culture.language will only help......CNA's are not the only people that have to carry heavy things....as a nurse you will also be expected to carry your fair share. Nurses lift patients, pull them up in bed, assist them to the chairs, push heavy stretchers and carry heavy objects as well.

I was a CNA and i am very petite and super skinny ....i.did great. All u need is technique when lifting....and of course be kind and friendly to your coworkers so when you are in need of help they can happily assist you. I
