I applied for a transfer from the low acuity ICU to the Behavioral Health department. I interviewed yesterday, and got the job!! It's a float pool position, so I will go between the different units in the department, as well as the psych ER. I get the same pay and benefits I already have, but will do charge nurse sometimes. I get 10-12 weeks of orientation, which includes classroom and preceptorship.
I've wanted to this for a long time, but was nervous to make the switch. But I finally realized I just don't enjoy regular medical nursing anymore. I think I will really like this new job. So excited:)

We are a very special breed us psych nurses; it's not for everyone. Congratulations and FTR bone up on your non-verbal communication. Many times it's not what they verbally say.

yay! Congrats on the switch :)
Thank you, I'll keep that in mind. I had the opprotunity to observe for 3 nights, when I worked as a super user for the computer med charting. I also floated a couple times on a travel contract, taking care of a couple geri psych patients. So it's not totally blind atleast. In nursing school, my instructor recommended I make behavioral health my specialty, she said I was a natural. So we shall see. I am very excited about it.
