I got a DUI two years ago, will that affect my acceptance into a nursing program?

Published

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone was able to get into a nursing program with a DUI history. I want to know what my chances are before I fork over the money to hire a lawyer to get it removed...if that is even possible. HELP!!!!! Please and thank you

It is very possible that you can be accepted into nursing school and allowed to sit for the NCLEX, but be forewarned that you will most likely immediately be placed into a monitoring program by the board of nursing that will limit your practice, have random testing at your expense, and mandate attendance at a local weekly recovery meeting.

If getting the charge expunged it a realistic possibility, it may be a wise choice to save you money and hassle in the long run.

Best of luck.

U need to check with your nursing program and their policy. My program accept DUI if it's the only offense and it's older than 3 years. Another nursing program in my area won't accept any type of offenses regardless

Hi Lhalty, I am curious what state your in.

The bigger question is whether you can get a license. Lots of nursing schools will accept people with all kinds of backgrounds, knowing that they will have difficulty getting licensed, but happy to take their tuition money.

It would be to your benefit to have it expunged whether or not you decide to pursue nursing.
