I just got back from the info night at my school. They mentioned that math 090 is a pre req for Bio 090. This got my attention because there were no pre reqs listed. Turns out there is a ton of algebra in it. I can't do algebra!! I'm in a low math class working my way up. It is too late to drop that was the 31st. (the bio is a late start) So it seems i'm stuck!
Plus on the website it says you need psy 101 to take psy 235 which is a pre req but tonight i found out i don't need it.
I'm 2 maths away from 090. (in math 030) This means I will have to tack on a year to the pre reqs maybe!!
just venting i guess. but i'm way bummed out.

Hang in there...so many of us have started this journey thinking it would be short and then it turns out to be years...I have been at it for three years now just trying to get 5 pre-req's...turns out the only place I can afford to get them is a city college and even though I am registered the classes are so impacted that the first year I could not even get into the classes I needed.
If you want to do this now...then you will want to do it even more in a year. Hang in there! You will get there! :)
It is too late to drop, so I am stuck taking this class I am sure to fail because I won't understand the math. I'm angry that registration let me sign up for the remedial math and then this class.

It is really too bad that you can't wait to take the class later, but since you have to take it then you have no choice. you CAN get through this math class- it wont be easy but you can do it
try to sign up for a one-on-one math tutor for at least an hour a week and if that isn't working either get a different tutor or spend more time with them. This isn't as expensive as it sounds because a lot of math students like to do this as a part time job (and it is cheaper than repeating the course). Ask your teacher where you could find a tutor.
Good luck! I hope it works out for you

Ever heard of self-fulfilling prophecy? You are only setting yourself up to fail by your negative thoughts. Try to relax, you really don't know what to expect until you get in the class. It may not be so bad. It may be a situation where they suggest you take math first but it's not actually required and it may be very basic math. I know when I took Anatomy, they said to take Chemistry first because the first half was on Chemistry. In reality there was barely a half a chapter on Chemistry. Try to relax and be positive.

I am so sorry you're having a tough time! I am horrible at algebra too and am taking it this semester...the funny thing is, it's not so bad! I have an excellent teacher and I'm grasping concepts that used to baffle me. I know math is very scary but don't give up, I'll help you! PM me or we can message back and forth on this thread...believe me, if I can understand it, anyone can. You'll make it I promise!

It is so frustrating to think you have things under control only to find out that there is more ... way more. Hang in there. Math will come up over and over and over. You will need it for chem, probably a bit for physio and micro (I did, anyway) you will need it for nursing school entrance exams, for figuring meds, IV drip rates, etc. You will need to tame your fear and distaste for math and just go for it or it will eat you. Yes, it might add time to your path. I am sorry - that part is rotten. I know how that feels. It sometimes took me 2 semesters to get into prereq classes, they were so impacted.
For math, try to get a tutor, go to the math lab or center as often as you can, talk with your instructor, consider classes or programs for math "phobias," hypnotherapy or counseling if you are really distressed. There are classes much harder than math coming up! So don't limit yourself. You can do it! That is why those classes build upon the last, baby steps. Definitely, if you keep telling yourself you can't, you won't be able to. Hang in there!

I am sorry this happened, but it seems you are stuck now so you should just make the most of it. Your first step is to change your attitude. That will be half the battle. Tell yourself that you can do it. Check out Amazon.com and start reading reviews for Algebra study books that you can study along side this class to help you. Set aside some time each night (if possible) until you feel a little more comfortable.
I am planning on taking the Algebra CLEP test in a few months and I got the Practical Alegbra book to help me learn Algebra. It has been a long while since high school. Check out the below link. Everybody raves about it.

I took Chemistry about 2 1/2 years ago and let me tell you I thought I was in a math class. There were just so many calculations. I just practiced and practiced until I figured them out. I got an A in the class. You can do it. Good Luck!!

I know how you feel. I had to take a few developmental classes before I could start the credit classes. But you know what, I found that they really helped me. I "really" knew how to do the math problems with my eyes closed and I can write one hell of a paper. This allowed me to score high on the NET test and the TEAS test. As well as keep a 4.0 in College math, English 1 & 2. Believe me, if you've been out of school for many years as I have, these classes will fully prepare you for the level of work that will be required of you later. You'll see.

i know just how you feel, had the same problem but not with math, with financial aid, cant start now, praying to be able to start on fall08
Thanks for all the encouragement! I really mean it.
I agree the only thing that I can do is hold my head up and go. Then when it gets too hard to ask for help. And trust me I plan to. I just was hating knowing that I am at a disadvantage before the class even starts. It is some kind of hybrid of Biology and Chemistry. It is supposed to get you ready to take A and P. So I have to just grit my teeth and do it.
Math was my sworn enemy. When I was young I took some college classes everything but math! (It was 1992 and I was 18) Then I got married and had 3 babies in 4 years so I was a bit busy for school. But now after going to school for and working as a MA I really am ready to continue...
I also have learned that math is not so bad with a good teacher, but still my kids are doing higher math than I am in my class! I had to go back to the begining which stinks but I think is the only way to go.
I will let everyone know how the class is going.

None of the bio classes have math in them. DON"T WORRY!!! You will do well if you focus on the here and now and forget about preconcieved notions about doing bad at subjects. Just try hard and don't give up before you even start!
Good luck! You can and will do this.
