I failed my TEAS

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

I took my Teas test today and I failed. I have one more chance to take it on June 20th. I got a 46% on the Math and I needed a 63%. I got a 63% on the science and needed a 67%. I had 60 mins. to answer 55 math questions and only finished 35. The computer just shut off and went to the next section! If I fail it the second time I have to wait another semester to re-apply and take it over again! Any advice? Anyone else have the same problem?:banghead:

It sounds like between now and June 20th you should work math problems every day to try and increase your speed. Also review the sort of questions in the science section that you weren't prepared for. You may want to make up work sheets of practice problems and have a friend time you and then try to get to the point where you can do problems like you encountered on the test at the rate of 1 per minute. I have a documented learning disability related to the speed at which I do math and am very concerned about how I'll do on the math portion. I have questions in at the local state university LD office to see if there are any modifications that I can be allowed for the math section of the TEAS. If I cannot get the same types of modifications that I've been allowed during my college classes, then I'll just have to study more for and work 3x harder than the average student on those sections and I'll just plan to be wiped out for the rest of the day and accept that I did my best.

How disappointing, I am sorry. Definitely do a search on all.nurses and type in TEAS. You will find tons of threads about the TEAS, read all the suggestions - the posts are very helpful.

Now you have been through it once and you know what to expect and what and how to study. If math was your sticky point, definitely work on math everyday to build your speed. JBRN2B and others have described in past posts how to back-solve and only partially solve some of the math. This will by you time! Also, if you are having trouble, don't take too long, take you best guess, mark it and move on. If you have time later, go back. But don't take a lot of time on a couple hard questions when you could have answered correctly on 5 others and maybe even guessed correctly on that one.

Do math drills of the basic math addition, subtraction, multiplication and division every single day at least 1/2 hour for your speed. Make sure you know how to do the calculation to get the correct answers for ratio, proportion, conversions, etc. If there is something that you don't know and don't have time to learn - algebra, for example, now might not be the time to try to learn, but if you know how to do everything else, speed up on that.

Also, there are other nursing exam test books out there, that are helpful. I borrowed one from the library that was not ATI, and did the math from that book, as well. Also, I did my kids' math software for added practice. Anything that will increase your speed and confidence is good.

If you can get a tutor or friend or family that can show you some tricks, utilize their skills and enlist their help. It can make a huge difference to have friendly assistance.

You have three weeks. With daily dedication you can do it! Consider your first test a trial run!

Good luck.

Thanks so much!

Hi,

I didn't have to take the TEAS; I took the NET.

The thing I found most helpful was a GED prep book. I got it at the public library and used it for the things I couldn't remember how to do.

It has very basic descriptions/steps for all types of math problems.

It won't really help with the Science portion, but it will help with both reading comp. and math.

I also had a Barron's Test Prep book that covered all of the TEAS sections. I didn't find it nearly as helpful as the GED book, but I didn't have to do the Science portion.

If you go to the top of this forum and look at the NET posting, there are great tips for the NET math section that will help you study for any math test.

Hope this helps~

I would take the pencil/paper version if at all possible. You have way more time to go through all of the problems you know and then go back or perhaps guess at which ones are left.

Luckily for me the 2nd time I took it it was the SAME EXACT test. Maybe you can remember the types of ?? and focus your studying towards what you know you needed help with.

I got into my nursing program this fall YEAH FOR ME so I am glad I never have to take the TEAS again. It was so unpredictable the randomness to the ?? esp. in the science portion.

I'm really sorry to hear that. It seems like you weren't that far off on the Science, so you just have to focus on Math for the next 3 weeks. Like the other person said practice, practice, practice. But maybe you can practice with on-line/computer so it's a close to the real exam environment as possible and set a timer or somesort of alarm that goes off every minute and try and figure out what type of problems take ou longer than 1 minute to solve (did they have maybe a lot or word problems that took time to read) and focus on those.

Don't worry, next time you'll do great!!!
