Hello everyone....I hope you don't mind me venting a little here....
So I'm 23, and finally after over 6 years of being out of high school...I finally decided to get my head out of the gutter and go to school! Nursing seems to be my passion for the moment, and I am soo dedicated to this! I begin pre-reqs in the fall.
Of course the first step is to drive. I never needed to drive before. No one wanted to teach me, and there was no reason to. Plus I was masking my cowardness on that excuse. I now have a reason to....to go to school! I passed my permit test on May 29, and have practiced driving for the last month. On Tuesday I took my test..and didn't pass!!!! The instructor said the only reason I didn't pass was because I missed a sign that said "No right on red", and I made the right!! I just started crying!! You work for hard for something you'd NEVER think you would do....and then fail at it!!! This is my first step of independence and being a nurse.....to drive!!!
So....school starts in Aug., I have a month and a half and 2 more times to get it right!
Thaks for letting me vent....this is such a huge obstacle to me...it really is!
Don't worry, you'll do better then next time around.
It took me two times to pass the driving test...it was weird though the first time I took the test, it was in a my driving instructor's car and he watched the whole thing. I thought I did brilliantly, butI was told that I entered the very first intersection unsafely (it was a roundabout with no stopsign....since I rolled through the intersection, he said I was unsafe) I disagreed, my instructor disagreed....but none of it mattered.
The second time I took the test, I did it in a friend of mine's car....that I had never driven before that day. I did everything wrong, and God Bless the inspector, he literally talked me through parallel parking step by step (just like an instructor would have)....and with his help I parallel parked perfectly....in front of a driveway. He mentioned it to me and asked me to try again, which I did with him walking me through it step by step again.
So, the first time I failed but should have passed and the next time I passed but should have failed
Don't stress, you'll totally look back on this and laugh!
Peace,
Cathie
My dad told me this story when I was learning to drive: When he was a teenager, he was very very excited about getting his license. After practicing with his mom, she decided he was ready to test. They got in the car and he drove his mom down to the DMV... and hit a car in the DMV parking lot. They turned around and went home.
After a bit more practicing, he went back and passed with flying colors. :) Don't be discouraged!
When my dad was learning to drive his very difficult father, my grandfather, was directing him to park the car in the garage, yelling as usual. Dad put on the gas instead of the brakes unfortunately, and drove right through the back of the garage. His father, naturally, totally lost it at that point, lol, it must have been quite a scene.
Your not alone. I failed my first driving test, I made a stupid mistake but one that they will fail you on. I had taken a driving education course, and they tell you exactly how to pass. In fact my grandfather who was a stickler on how to drive properly also had me out practicing with his big boat of a car. Had a good cry after failing and went back out and practiced until I retested. Looking back I wish I had taken just a little more time practicing before testing the first time, I just wasn't ready for the challenge the first time. The second time I went, I wound up with the same inspector that failed me the first time. As soon as I saw the dude I didn't feel the least bit intimidated, in fact I felt determined I was going to pass this time AND that's exactly what I did. I just felt ready to the challenge before I even got there that day, which is probably why having the same inspector didn't bother me.
I don't know if you've taken a driver's ed course, however there are places that may only charge by the lesson, call and ask around. A driving instructor will tell you how to avoid mistakes that can fail you. When I took driver's ed, the instructors would take me out and run through the routes the inspectors use for testing, they would point out areas to watch for during testing.
Sammy, you can do this. In two weeks when you pass, please let us know the good news.
I failed my first time too when I was 18. I was sooooo nervous....the lady testing me said I drive TOO SLOW...she said she tested old ladys that drove faster than me......ugh. I spend a day with a driving instructor and he took me through the course the DMV takes and I passed the second time.
I failed my first one at 16, then passed the second time - on a day they had cancelled school for snow (and in Minnesota that takes a lot). I never owned a car, and I forgot to renew my license after I moved to New Orleans. Enough time passed, and it turned out I had to take everything all over again. I still didn't have a license when DH and I evacuated for Katrina, and then I got stuck at my in-laws home in rural Arkansas for 2 months. My mother-in-law had to take me out to practice, which was more than a little embarassing, and to drive me around to get things like a state ID and a new social security card so I could apply for Katrina money from the government. I finally got my shiny new Arkansas driver's license at the ripe old age of 26, and earned a little freedom. Next hurdle: the car we bought after the storm was a stick shift, so then I had to learn that too. Now, I do it just fine.

Hi Sammygrll!
Not everyone gets it the first time... You will do fine... the good thing is that you are trying again - that is what counts. Good luck to you!
