So I failed my college algebra course and it is to late to withdraw next week is the final and there is no way i can bring my grade up at this point of time. My teacher is pretty tough on his test and I have not passed his last test which keeps me optismistic about this final. I am very dissapointed and down with myself i wish i can turn back time to change things. I know eveerything now is all excuses but what distracted me the most with this class was life itself. I had to go to court multiple times without a lawyer, my father been sick in the hospital and on top of all this i find out I am losing my job so i been really stressful this semester. Now that things are starting to get better i am stuck with this new problem. I wanted to take my pre reqs at the local community college and just transfer to the university to complete my BSN. Now I have two options,

Option A - To get my RN license and this path does not require the math but the F still stays in my transcript. I am taking nutrition and english which i have no problem passing with A or B. All I have is three sciences left which would be Anatomy I &II and Chemistry is all i have left.

Option B- To retake the math class and have 7 classes to go before I can apply to get the BSN program

Overall I learn my lesson through this whole experience i wish i took of this before it became a problem in the end when everything is starting to turn around. I really want to be a nurse and would prefer to get my BSN straight thorugh but being that I am 24 I want to get my career going. So far I thinking of getting my CNA license that I am almost finishing up and really want to get the experience i need. I feel so stupid for failing this course. Anyone word of advice.

The best advice I can give you is to stop trying to rush. Do not pile on more than you can manage in the event something goes wrong. You do not want one monkey to stop and ruin your entire show (or in this case one math class to ruin your entire transcript). Take the math class again because you'll likely need the math skills for drug calculations down the line, and exams on drug calculations do come quite frequently in the nursing programs around my way so I wouldn't be surprised if you end up seeing all those familiar old algebra friends again later.

Don't be afraid to ask for help. Seek tutoring when you need it -- as soon as trouble comes up so you can get things nipped in the bud before the hole gets huge and impossible to manage.

Best of luck to you! You sound like you will be able to turn this around in no time.

Have you checked out the prereqs for your BSN? They may require algebra so, if that's the case, you may want to think about retaking it. Also most programs will look at your overall GPA so you will want to consider that too to determine how it will affect it.

Good luck!

I am sorry. I am facing something similar right now. I may or may not pass the math class I am currently in too. I agree with sugarnsass though, you should just slow down and take time with your schooling. Quality of work matters much more over quantity. If you wan to get by in school faster, try taking easy classes over the summer or clumping a lot of easy classes with one hard class. You will get your electives out of the way and have time to think about your more important classes. I think you will be ok, we are all humans and make mistakes sometimes. Just learn from this one and move on with you life. Good luck!:nurse:

I don't see a choice. An "F" drags your GPA down so badly, if you are not already accepted into the CON, I can see this one class closing that door. If you do get in, with an "F" on your transcript- unless you are an exceptional student, it will be an anchor dragging down your GPA for the rest of your BSN. That makes your opportunities for any future post grad options much harder. I would take a little longer and retake that puppy now. I agree with your plan to take the pre-req s before you start nursing school. It only gets tougher and you'll need to focus as much as you can on the nursing classes when you get there. I had a life too when I was in school, and I can tell you, the more you can get out of the way before the gauntlet starts, the better.

I failed College Algebra too. I'm considering taking it again, but I've taken an alternate math (quantitative, which is actually the math required at one of the programs I'm applying to) and did pretty well as well as aced Stats. None of the BSN programs I'm applying to require college algebra and some of them only use the classes they require in the GPA calculations so retaking it is kind of a conquering a demon, so to speak. Yes, it brings down your overall GPA, but if you ace your other classes and it's not required for the programs you're applying to, I believe you still have a decent chance of getting into a program. JMO-FWIW. :)

thanks you guys i am starting to feel a little bit better.

I failed college algebra a few years ago and I retook during the summer. I think you just retake it. I think BSN programs usually require you to have college algebra. Im sorry to hear about all the things you have been going through. Good luck with everything and dont beat yourself up about that F.

Here's my 2 cents.

Remember how when we were kids we always had a "do-over"? We relied on it. It was our chance to relive a defining moment, and emerge VICTORIOUS from a previous defeat. The do-over was everything we wanted it to be; a teacher, a friend, a consolation, and a lesson learned.

Well, now you are an adult. And the first thing that you learn when you are an adult is that Do-overs are a real b*@!ch. I mean think about it. You have to do-over your college algebra course to get rid of the boat anchor on your GPA.

So my advice is. Focus on the first time. Get it right the first time. Think before you act. Act with intention. Remember, do-overs are for kids.

So the next time you sign up for algebra, make algebra your life. Family health issues, going to court, Glee, getting drunk watching American Idol, whatever; these are things that should be reduced and subservient to your new God, Algebra.

I'm not saying that you ignore the other important stuff. But prioritization is key. Do-overs suck.

I am taking Mat 102, what I found helpful for me was practicing my problems everyday, reviewing lecture notes, making my self actually do the homework problems, and getting tutoring at least once a week for a hour. What I don't understand I speak up in class and I say I don't undrstand redo the problem. I will be taking Mat 110 this Summer with the same teacher because I know her teaching style and she is awesome. I had to retake mat 101 and that really sucked, but I had to get over it and start passing these math classes and really understanding the material well enough to pass. I have got a new study system and it works for me I currently have a A average in math 102, and I plan on doing the same study system to get through math 110. Good luck you will retake the class and pass, no need to let that stop you from what you are trying to do. The way I see it the 1st time around you don't get it the 2nd time you will, you live and you learn.
