Just wondering if y'all call parents of kiddos who've had an injury, such as ran into a pole, punched by another kid. My admin wants me to call every parent of an injured student. What I think of as an injury and what my admin thinks of an injury is way different. I would be on the phone all day with parents if it was up to her!! It's only my first year, just a little frustrated!!

I feel your pain. I'm willing to fall in the sword if a parent of a 'ran into the wall' kid gets mad I didn't call.. be Izs not all clinic visits constitute a call. If it's a true injury I'll call, if i'm assess. kid after a fight, i'll call. Imaginary injuries from running into walls, not so much.

Same as above. I've gotten the parent march into my office the next morning with their hair on fire because I didn't call them when their little one came in. But then we talk about what actually happened here in my office and usually we laugh and all is well. It's crazy how a stomach ache before the math test we didn't study for, turns into the nurse "made me stay for math even though I was puking"

I do have a short list of parents who get calls for everything because that's what they want.

Yeah, I err on the side of caution, but I don't call on the "in and outs" (students who stop in and get "better" on their own).

Had an interesting one. I had a signed authorization for a procedure for one boy. Normally, I'd not bother with a follow up call but I had time and I just wanted to see if mom had any questions about it. Turns out, mom hadn't signed and hadn't even heard about it before my call. Don't know whose signature was on the form, but mom said she would deal with the issue and thanks for calling.

I make sure that a parent/guardian is called for all injuries. If it's a fight or injury caused by another student, then I have the teacher or admin call so that they can explain what's being done about the incident as far as discipline. If it's anything else, then I call. My parent conversations for simple injuries are probably 1 minute long, if that. I would rather take the time to call than have a helicopter/over-reactive parent call me screaming that they weren't notified.

For complaints of illness...if there isn't a fever or clear cut reason that the student needs to go home, I try to strongly encourage the student to return to class. If the student refuses to return to class, then I call the parent and tell them exactly that.

My admin and protocol is if there's an injury that was accidental, like from PE or so, I try to ask the teacher first and then call the parent. Sometimes children say, "I got pinched by my friend." when in reality it's, "My friend pushed her chair and it pinched me." so I ask the teacher. If it's from PE, the PE teacher is a sweetheart and actually calls them for me before going to me, which makes my job way easier, since she was there when it happened.

If there was something involving another student, I call the parent, but I explain before I continue that I'm just calling for the medical needs of their child, anything involving discipline or so, that's under our admin's job and I will be emailing our Dean of students with the situation so she can investigate it. With that the parent understands and I continue with my assessment and let them know if the child is alright or not. Sometimes they want to rant about "My child has been bullied and..." and I tell them I understand but "once again, ma'am, I'm not in charge of the discipline of the students or know what happened, all I am in charge of is the medical needs of the child."
