I bought books on "Your first year as an RN"

Published

Hi! I'm so excited to take NCLEX this week and start my new RN job that I went to the bookstore last weekend and bought these two books. One is entitled "Your first year as a nurse" by Donna Cardillo and the other is called "How to survive and maybe even love your life as a nurse." I just started to look through them-they're funny and filled with good advice! :) It's so exciting to be starting my career as a nurse! :)

http://www.allbookstores.com is a great resource for finding new and used books...it compares prices of many many bookstores...i saved over $500 bucks on books while in nursing school using this site. Check it out!

I have the Donna Cardillo book-it is very good, and I like that she has stories and quotes from nurses through out the book-it reinforces what she is saying.

I also go the "Training Wheels" book-that is good because I carry it in my purse and can pop it open anywhere and read tips....

I just celebrated my first year as a nurse on June 30. I wish I had known about these books sooner, but I am still going to read them, thanks for the info. Good luck to those who are taking the NCLEX. Your first year is filled with more valuable information than you could ever have imagined. I hope that you all are lucky enough to have good preceptors who are patient, kind, and knowledeable. It makes all the difference. Good luck to you all.

I'm not even in nursing school yet, but I bought both of those books. Just wanting to get a head start...

Anyhow, I didn't really like the Donna Cardillo book as much as I liked Kelli Dunham's book. The Donna Cardillo book had a lot of generalized information that could apply to several professions. The only thing that separates this book from a book writing as advice for another profession is that it did have boxes about life as a nurse. I couldn't finish it... maybe I will one day and I'll find out more info that is indigenous to nursing, but until then, it was just common sense sprinkled a few situations that apply to nurses. Just in my opinion, it didn't have any depth to it.

The Kelli Dunham book was much, MUCH better. The book gave solid, concrete advice that applied only to nursing. It had a sense of realism to it that the other book did not. She covered more problems in depth and the reading level was beyond that of high school. I would highly recommend this book. To be fair, I haven't finished this one either but this is only because of time constraints, not because I don't want to finish the book. Actually, it's one of these books that I'm going to feel bad about finishing and I hope she writes another book with solid advice about nursing.

I read Kelli Dunham's "How to Survive - And Maybe Even Love - Nursing School" and really enjoyed it. I would definitely buy anything she wrote. She's very down-to-earth and blows no smoke!

That is a good book also. I remember reading that one as well. I am just a regular book worm! :) Anyone ever read any Echo Heron books? I have two of hers-really exciting stories in there. :)
