I AM CONFUSED

Published

So I'm planning on becoming a nurse and study at SF State, San Jose State, or Cal East Bay

I don't get the program.

So you take your prereqs right? and then what? do you have to apply to the pre nursing program after you finish your prereqs or are you automatically in and all you have to worry about is getting in to the nursing major?

and i'm just wondering... is pre nursing your first and second years of college and the nursing major the third and fourth years?

i'm really sorry if this post is too long and i sound like a complete dum dum.. it's just that i'm really confused.

I strongly recommend you to visit each of these nursing school's website, download their informational packet/pamphlet, and study them well. Each school have informational meetings that you might want to consider attending. But just to give you an idea, prerequisites + lower division GEs will take you about 2 years to complete. Those 2 years are generally considered as your college freshmen & sophmore years. Once you're accepted into any of these nursing schools, you're typically in sophmore/junior status. BSN program from these schools will take about 3 years to complete.

As far as the application process goes, once you've completed the prerequisite classes & some of your lower division GEs, you'll likely need to take some sort of entrance exam (TEAS for example). You'll need to apply to each university & their perspective nursing school. So for example, when I applied to CSUEB's BSN program, I had to submit a university application via csumentor.edu & a nursing program application online through their website. So technically you'll have to submit two applications per CSU. I believe the deadline for university application is typically late November. Nursing school application deadline varies. Typically when you submit your university application, you'll want to list "pre-nursing" as your major. Once you're accepted, your major will be changed accordingly. Hope this answered most of your questions. Good luck!

so basically, pre nursing is just a name of some sort?

because I've always thought that it is a program that you would need to finish in order to get in to the nursing program.

for the application, do you apply to the school again even if you're already in since you took your prerequisite and GEs there? and is the November application date also apply to the date for the nursing program application?

but the last time I checked, CSUEB only had the pre nursing major. is it the same as BSN?

thank you sooo much for being willing to answer my questions. you're awesome :)

Some schools may have a pre-nursing program, but I don't think it's required that you declare yourselfy pre-nursing.

Most schools do required that you apply to the nursing program regardless.

Pre nursing is not the same as BSN. That's a bachelor's degree in nursing, where you go to a 4 year college and, well, get your bachelor's in nursing. :)

As stated by several people on your other posting, "pre-nursing" alone is not an associate degree program. You can think of "pre-nursing" as a name of some sort to categorize yourself as, during the period of time when you're working on your prerequisites.

For those 3 schools specifically & as a transfer applicant, I had to declare myself as a pre-nursing major during university applications (via csumentor.edu). I'm not sure if it's absolutely essential to do so but it was clearly stated on their informational packet/pamphlet. I'm not sure how that works if say, you're a current student @ CSUEB. I believe once you're accepted into the BSN program & you accepted the offer, you major will be changed to BSN nursing by the nursing department. At least that was the case for me.

If you're a current student at CSUEB, for example, you will not need to submit another university application there. Nursing program application deadline for these schools varies. You should definitely visit each of these nursing school's website, download their informational packet/pamphlet, and study them well. Many of your questions (including deadlines) will be answered by reading them carefully.

I'm actually in the SJSU Nursing Program right now. So I can give a little advice about how to work with this school.

You need to get into SJSU first, and list your major as Pre-Nursing. (You'll need to take the WST to get into SJSU)

When you've been accepted to the school, THEN you can apply to the School of Nursing (SJSU SON). (And you'll need to take the TEAS with a passing score of 80% before applying.)

Here's the website: Welcome to the School of Nursing Website

And this is the Undergrad info: BS Nursing

You need to go to one of the meetings that Dr. Malloy puts on - she's the advisor for incoming students. The meetings go over everything and anything you need to know about the program and how to get into it.

Sorry this post is a little sporadic, but I'm doing this before I have to go to work, which is now! I hope this helped a little! :)

Take the advice that some of the posters mentioned. Attend the meeting or information sessions of your school of choice and ask a million questions to them if you have to. You MUST leave out of there fully understanding everything you need to do to get into the program. Don't be shy, they are there to help you.

Yeah, don't be afraid to ask a million questions - usually the staff remember people like that.

And make sure your pre-reqs are equivalent from school to school! Check out Welcome to ASSIST if you haven't already. Choose your school that you took your pre-reqs at, then choose the school you want to tranfer to, then choose the Nursing BSN option. It matches everything up to make sure you took the right classes.

And for SJSU, remember that there are NO waiting lists to get into the program. Everyone is based on a Compaction Score, and the pool resets every semester. You'll be competing with new applicants, as well as applicants who didn't get in the previous semester.

Prenursing is generally a way to reference the classes needed to prepare for the nursing program, either an ADN or BSN. In most places, you have to apply to the Nursing program to be admitted to their nursing programs. That admission group is much more selective, in most cases and often your grades in the in "prenursing" (in many places are simply known as prerequisites) will be given more weight than other scores.

Passing prerequisites/prenursing at a school does NOT ensure admission to their nursing program, or to ANY nursing program, at most schools.

This is similar to medical school. Just because one gets a Bachelor's w/concentration for premed, does not mean that one will get into medical school. And even if one passes medical school and Boards, they still have to jump through hoops to get a good residency.

Part of the issue is that nursing and medicine are not like regular degrees. With many courses of study, if you have more qualified applicants one year, you can add a few chairs to a classroom and a book or two. With nursing/medicine, there has to be a great deal of supervision and hands on teaching. There is more liability. Clinical experiences must be arranged. There must be adequate resources for labs, and limits on numbers of students per clinical instructor. These degrees also require a certain knowledge of the students, their capabilities as well as ethical principles, to ensure a safe ethical practitioner...because the stakes are higher.

thank you soooo much everyone.

you guys are just the best.

all of you really enlightened my mind.

thank you for your generosity.

I wish all of you the best in life :)

I have a question regarding pre-nursing at SJSU. I have a 3.18 GPA and plan on applying to SJSU this fall (2011) for admission into fall 2012. Is there criteria for being accepted as "pre-nursing"? Or do I simply need to have a 2.6 GPA and have taken the WST?

Basically, is it possible to get denied for pre-nursing?

blacksheep45

Yes, there is criteria. My year (I graduated high school in 2009), if the university accepted you & you declared your major as "pre-nursing", you were automatically in "pre-nursing." Then you'd do your pre-reqs, take the WST/TEAS & apply to the nursing school when you're done with the aforementioned. Now, since pre-nursing is crowded there is supplemental criteria everyone must meet. So what that means is that, even if SJSU accepts you, it doesn't mean you get into "pre-nursing." You need to have a certain high school GPA. So if you don't get into "pre-nursing", but get into the university, your major is listed under "undeclared." Then, you could apply to "pre-nursing" (there is an app for that too), after your first year at SJSU. You have to be listed under "pre-nursing" to be able to apply to the nursing school.
