I am allergic to...

We all know there are patients who claim to have some OUTRAGEOUS allergies. Some we have to hold our chuckles back... Post some of the best "allergies" you have ever heard...

1) I had a patient tell my PCA that she was allergic to cocaine when he was registering her. He couldn't bring himself to ask her what happened when she used it. So I go into the room and ask... turns out it gives her a bloody nose and heart palpitations.

2) I am allergic to Tylenol. Why? It doesn't work for me.

3) I am allergic to Benadryl. It makes me really tired.

4) I am allergic to Morphine and Dilaudid, but they gave me Fentanyl last time I was here.

I could keep going all day...

Isn't shellfish a pretty common allergy? Or maybe I have just known a lot of people allergic to it. I have a friend that is allergic to it but she loves shrimp, every once in a while she will eat shrimp and then take benadryl. This girl is allergic to tons of stuff and so accident prone as well, I always tease her that she needs a body proof vest.

My dad is allergic to shellfish, but it is the shells for him and not so much the meat. Sometimes the meat inside will cause a reaction and he needs to be medicated, but the shells make him react the worst. As with many allergies, certain shellfish induce a bigger allergic reaction than others for him. He is also allergic to iodine.

Shellfish is one of the big 8 allergens and must be noted on food labels in the US, so it is common.

Not so long ago, I had a lady with a looooong list of home meds including Lortab, Percocet, and Tylenol. Her allergy list was about as long and included....Acetaminophen, hydrocodone, and oxycodone. I tried explaining to her that if she takes these meds on a daily basis with no ill effects then she obviously doesn't have an allegy(possibly a tiny bit of liver failure?). She fired me from her care...lol!:yeah: I gladly traded pts with a coworker.
