Just found out Im getting 6 thousand dollars back as a tax refund...im a new grad and this will go a long way to paying off some of my nursing school debt :D Any one else got a big refund this year?

Kudos to all of you making such wise financial choices!

well between the 2 i have to pay in about $1200....and i have 3 kids. sometimes that makes me want to quit my job so i can get $thousands$ of dollars of everyone else's money. but i'm not bitter or anything.

I received a large refund but that was kind of bittersweet. It meant that we didn't make much money last year. People keep complaining about people not paying taxes but I would love to make enough money to pay more taxes. I would give up that refund in a second if I could have a nursing job. Paying more taxes would mean that I am making enough money to pay my bills. Paying more taxes would mean that I would actually have enough money to buy a house. I don't want to qualify for the EIC but we do. I would love for someone to give me their job so they could qualify for the EIC and I could pay more taxes. Anyone willing to switch? ;)

We fall into that category. I work very part-time and DH is on SSDI so our income is pretty low. We also have a handicapped son. The kids are on free lunches and DH is on Medicare and DS is on Medicaid. Therefore we qualify for several govt programs, including an Earned Income Credit. All year long i pay taxes on my paltry little income. But then the govt refunds all of it. Therefore we receive all our money back, >$8000 this year. Yay! New thermopane windows on the front of the house!

That's a smart investment!!!!!

It must be great to want someone to give you their better paying but it doesn't work that way. Try going to night school while working full time. Going to work overseas while leaving the spouse behind to pay for schooling. Put in the long hourse required to accomplish the goals. People see someone making a lot of money and think "must be great making that kind of money" but never contemplate how that person arrived at their current situation or the sacrifices that were made along the way. If you want a nursing job go to school and get the required training and become a nurse. Is it tough when you have other obligations? You bet it is. Is it worth it in the end? It was for me and my family. I've been in the position of living off credit cards and post dating checks to make ends meet. But I worked hard to get where I am and if other people are jealous of the low hours I work and the high amount of money I make TOO BAD. No one is going to take better care of yourself or your family than YOU and to expect otherwise is foolish. If you want it bad enough you can make it happen.

I did go to nursing school and I am a nurse. The problem is finding a nursing job. I worked very hard for my degree/license. I went to night school and at times had to work full time while attending school full time. I don't expect anyone to hand anything to me. I have been looking for a job for a year now. It just bothers me when people complain about anyone not paying enough taxes in this economy. Do I want to be in the position to not pay federal taxes? Do I want to work at a job making minimum wage when I worked so hard to get a degree in nursing. When I do land a nursing job and pay more taxes I will never look down on the people who don't earn enough to pay federal income tax. The reason 47% of people who filled income taxes don't pay any federal income tax is because they made such as small amount of money last year.

America as we know it cannot survive when almost half the people in it do not pay taxes. Perhaps if people had an ownership stake in the economy (everyone paying taxes) then people would better themselves or even get a 2nd or 3rd job to help out. All that government assistance does is let someone just get by. People need an incentive to better themselves at times and perhaps paying taxes would be that incentive.
