Did anybody apply to HSU for the spring 2010 nursing class? I just applied to the university today since they are only accepting pre-nursing majors for the school as transfers and 2nd bacs. Now, I'm going to apply to the nursing school. Wish me luck for the spring 2010!
Yep! A "youngin" here, too! I'm 20. I didn't graduate HS early, but I was young for my class. I graduated at 17. I didn't know what I wanted to do as a major yet (I thought I wanted to do pre-med or be a teacher), so I decided to apply to a community college and not blow a whole bunch of money at an expensive state school while I was feeling out what I wanted to do with my life. If there was one thing I knew for sure, it was that I did NOT want to be a nurse. Why? Because my Mom's a nurse and has been pushing nursing on me since she started out. She's a nurse manager at the V.A. after working her way from a CNA to an ADN to a BSN to an MSN. Well, I soon found out I was destined to be a nurse and I can still remember the day I told my mom she was right! :) Hahaha. Needless to say, she was thrilled--and I was too!
Anyway, yeah mine says that too(about the transcript thing)! But I have an e-mail chain from the admissions coordinator which states that they've received both of my official transcripts (I took one class [a prerequisite for SMU] online through a college in Oregon so I have 2 official transcripts). There must be a glitch because we all sent ours in!! And I have proof that they have mine!
I agree that an RN is an RN, but I know that at places like the VA, the pay is definitely not the same. ADN nurses make approximately $15,000 less than a BSN nurse there. My mom hardly ever hires ADN nurses and I know it's becoming harder and harder for ADN nurses to get a job anywhere, not just the VA. However, I must say that if I don't get into any BSN programs for spring 2010, I'll probably apply to a couple of ADN programs for fall 2010. Atleast then I'll get a start and I can do an RN-BSN program after.
yeah, apparently i still owe HSU a transcript....unsure why it's not there...greeeeaaaat :)
yea, I don't understand why they are wanting one from me too. And I sent in one already before the 26th of sept(my due date).
when is your deadline?
Thanks. I knew I wanted to be a nurse by the end of my junior year in high school. I realized how much I loved helping my community, especially with the poor Latino and underserved populations. I also realized my passion for tutoring and teaching with patience! I love it because I like seeing my peers learn new things. I can appreciate those small things, and I also like sciences in school from medical sciences to social sciences. So this path took me into nursing.
HOW FUNNY! :) Small world, indeed. My mom's in charge of the HBPC program for all of NorCal, so they wouldn't know each other. But that's really neat! I work there right now as a SCEP student (I don't know if she told you about that program??) but it's giving me really good experience---and gave me 5 extra points for HSU, hopefully! hah

really? for Palo Alto too?
hmm I volunteered for the VA in Houston, Texas and in Palo Alto. I've heard of only the VERSANT (spelling?) and the VALOR programs. I have hopes to work there after nursing school and before I make my next move in life. I love the VA Palo Alto.
yeah, the valor program is just for people who are currently in nursing school (i'm hoping to do that next summer--fingers crossed!!). but the scep (student career experience program) is just for anyone who's in college. i'm pretty sure you don't even have to be interested in the healthcare field, just enrolled in school. they only take people once a year, but if you tell the nurses that you're going into nursing school they'll teach you a lot! i get to watch surgical procedures, help the nurses recover patients in the pacu, wheel patients to their cars, etc. and it's really helpful. the pay is anywhere from $10-20/hr depeding on experience and number of years in college. i have cna experience, volunteer work, and my cpr certification plus like 70 semester units of college (no degree though--a degree [aa,as,etc] would get you higher pay). that landed me in the upper half which is nice because honestly i'd do it for free. it's really, really helpful. i learn so many terms and procedures and it's just amazing. i'd look into it if i were you!! i'm pretty sure all the va's around here have the program. i'm not 100% positive, though. i've never been to the va in palo alto, but my mom has. she has to travel around to the locations with the programs/departments she's in charge of. i'm sure it's great! is that where you want to get a job at when you graduate? if so, what department are you looking at?
oh, here i found this:
students
the student educational employment program (seep) provides federal employment opportunities to students who are enrolled or accepted for enrollment as degree-seeking students taking at least a half-time academic, technical, or vocational course load in an accredited high school, technical, vocational, two- or four- year college or university, graduate, or professional school. this program is comprised of two components: the student temporary employment program (step) and the student career experience program (scep).
the student temporary employment program (step) offers temporary employment ranging from summer jobs to positions that can last for as long as you are a student. these employment opportunities need not necessarily be related to your academic field of study.
the student career experience program (scep) provides a formal work-study program to degree-seeking students in accredited high schools, colleges, and universities. it requires a commitment by you, your school, and the employing federal agency. you may be eligible for permanent employment under this component after successfully completing your education and meeting work requirements
ok so did everyone get that e-mail today sent by the office of admissions at hsu saying that "we will
be working on the admissions portion of the student center for the next
3-4 weeks and during that time you will not be able to view your
application status when you log into the system. in the meantime,
please feel free to contact us directly if you have any questions about
your application by either email, [email protected] or by calling our
toll-free number, 1/866-850-9556."
i guess that explains why the student center was all messed up! :) atleast we know we haven't been pre-rejected, lol.
OK i have another question.
I just looked at my "to do list" and it says I have a deadline of 10/29/09 to accept/decline my "awards". So I was like, do I even HAVE any awards, and if so what are they? So I went to the awards section and apparently I qualified for a loan of nearly 10K (which is news to me as my FAFSA said I didn't qualify for anything since I'm claimed as a dependent under my Mom). However, they only give until 10/29/09 for you to accept or decline this loan which is EARLIER than the date they're going to notify us of acceptance/rejection?!! Umm..how does THAT work?! I don't want to take it if I don't end up going there, of course....but I might look into it if I knew I was going there.
Umm..help?
Hmm, I didn't recieve any mail form HSU about the applications portion and not viewing our admissions status. Also, my to-do list was cleared. It used to have a task about them needing a transcript by 9-26-09, but I sent one in before that a long time ago. I wonder what this means to me as an individual for the nursing major? Accepted yet? rejected yet? hahaha
About your situation... I don't know. That's a toughie. I'd say, accept it, or at least I would because it is an opportunity "award" haha. I'm sure that you can cancel that loan when you know you are not going to be accepted to the major. Other than that, you can always call the school to see what's up with the "award".
