2012-2013 HRSA Nursing Scholarship Application

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

The application process hasn't even started yet but I didn't even find out about last year's scholarship until a couple days before the deadline. I did get my application in on time but was not fortunate enough to be a recipient. I intend to apply again for the upcoming scholarship. Any tips from those that were accepted? My EFC is 0, I'm in an undergraduate program, and my GPA is 3.4.

How can we find out who our caseworker is? I never got an email directly from them, only from the noreply@hrsa.

@kpnh10: I am not positive, but you can try that 'ask a question' feature on the portal and ask to speak with your representative. I sent a question through there and received a reply from my rep. I think the people who field those questions have access to our accounts, and could be able to pull up your rep/ or send the email on to them.

Hey everyone,

Some more updated info on the ORC! I contacted my nursing advisor, she was the one that filled out the form in early Summer. She gave me a break down of what she submitted. Which was scary!!! Of course like I stated none of the costs that came out of my own pocket were in there. Only what was being charged to my student account or that the nursing dept. estimated for fees, books etc... I went back and forth for two hours trying to figure it out. She even called HRSA trying to find out if she could amend the original form to include my additional costs such as software, tablet, immunizations that were all MANDATORY! They said NO! The ORC that they already have cant be changed.

All we can do is make a request through our portal. Where there is the Ask a Question tab, make a request through that tab and your request will get forwarded to the proper person/department. I was told that after getting a reply you will have to submit the details, receipts etc... and then it will be up to them if they will approve and reimburse those costs. I would suggest talking to your nursing dept/advisor and make sure that they are willing to supply a letter explaining that these costs were mandatory. I am submitting everything I paid for that was mandatory, and am crossing my fingers!!!!!

Hi all I know everyone here is excited and challenged (busy!) with their new scholarship info but I have a question to ask.

I am considering applying for next year but I am concerned about fulfilling the requirement of service with so many new grads trying to find work right now.

Is this a fear any of you have? Do you know what happens if you fail at finding work?

Ok, so here is what I know:

"NSP already has the ORC information from your school. The pre-determined amount will be paid to you in October with your (Jul - Oct) stipend. You do not need to submit anything at all in order to receive this payment".....I don't know if that is just from MY school, or if somehow they already have ORC info for everyone.

hmm...when I spoke with the lady at my school, handling all the HRSA information, she said that she did not receive any information, documents or paperwork from HRSA so thats why she was going to go ahead and send them an invoice for the ORC... so this makes it all a bit confusing. :/!!!!

pearlgirl52508,

What my advisor and HRSA told me was this. In early summer the schools of all the possible candidates or applicants were sent forms. They were general forms that HRSA sends out every year. They just said that a student at your school applied and is being considered for the NSP. At my school there were several applicants, so my nursing advisor had no idea what student or students were being considered. Then it just asks for an estimate of tuition and fees associated with that schools nursing program. I don't know who at each school fills out those forms, but according to HRSA that form is necessary for the process to continue. Of course who really knows!

You should find out though if any forms were sent to your school in last few months, they would be generic, nothing with your name or info on it. They also say nothing about ORC either, just asking for amounts for different fees, costs etc... That's why even my advisor and I were confused. We looked through the welcome packet saw the ORC list and wondered how you submit these extra costs if they ask for specifics months earlier than the program starts, and without a specific student being mentioned in the paperwork. How can they pay for immunizations etc.. if I hadn't got them yet or had any idea what they would cost. Good luck, and keep digging into the situation. I would ask questions through the portal and get answers straight from the horses mouth!!!

hey she has GOT to refuse those loans if you request it! the program won't pay if the loans are on there (according to the paperwork I've seen) go above her head if she won't do it.

There isn't any problem with loans you have taken out thus far. The only loans you have to worry about are the ones for next semester and beyond. You don't have to return your loan for the summer courses or this fall course. They will be reimbursed to your lender sometime in the spring. HRSA will still do that because they understand that we needed to pay for school prior to having confirmation about the scholarship. This will be the last semester you are able to do it this way. After this point, you will need to decline any loans offered to you prior to dispersement.

That seems to make alot of sense based on the bits of info we have all gotten. That being said, I think we are all kinda hoping that the ORC was more individualized. Who knows what our schools sent! I have a feeling alot of us spent more than what may be reflected. This should be very intetesting.

Do you apply for the HRSA at the start of nursing school or before? I will be able to apply for the nursing program next summer for the August class. So when should I apply for this? Where do I start? Thanks for your assistance.

kabda & garciamnic,

First you need to go to HRSA.gov then go to loans and scholarships, then to the nursing scholarship program (NSP). You will see a link (submit your email here) at the top of the page. You will be sent an email when the scholarship opens in the Spring. The scholarship is open for only a month so I would suggest going on the site and reading all the info about the scholarship, what it entails and what you need to do to apply. If you go on the site it will explain the income necessary to apply. Basically you have to be Pell eligible. That means when you fill out the FAFSA your EFC (estimated family contribution) is between 0-$5,500. If you are not eligible for the Pell grant, I would not waste my time applying. Of course that is up to you, anyone is able to apply, but you will read on the site that there is so many eligible applicants, they have never been outside the first funding preference. Meaning again Pell eligible 0-$5,500. There are other requirements, but you can read them for yourself. This scholarship is very competitive!! You are up against other nursing students who all have great grades, and letters of recommendation. I would read over the site, get your ducks in a row and prepare to put the best package you can together. If you do not volunteer at all, I would start!!!! Good Luck!
