2019-2020 HRSA Nursing Corps Scholarship

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

I can't seem to find a thread on the latest round of Nurse Corps Applications, So I'll start. My initial point is more of me venting, but guess I'll ask - Should I even continue with my application? The new cycle and FAFSA wants us to use 2017 tax info, but in 2017, I was preparing for school and was employed full-time. Now that I'm collecting pennies and in dire need of assistance, it looks like my EFC is almost 8000. I can rarely work in reality. I'm really disheartened and confused as to why the FAFSA is set up like that.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

It is SO competitive and so many people apply vs spots even highly qualified don't get spots. I had a 4.0, am EFC of 0, amazing references, good essays, history of community service and come from an underprivileged background. I still didn't get a spot.

wowwwwww . this is crazy

It is very competitive but I don’t think it hurts to apply. You don’t have to pay money just get your transcripts and paperwork, essays and references lined up. Be ready to have paperwork filled out the same day they email you. I saw someone comment and to compare: My Gpa was lower, 3.3, I’m not a great writer so my essays were adequate, great references, but I come from a disadvantaged background in almost every way. I received the scholarship. I would like to add that my schools tuition isn’t crazy high at less than 28k a year, and I think that might be a factor because why fund someone going to a school for 60k+ a year or more when a lot of applicants are qualified and costs are less. It’s just reasonable to me but not saying they didn’t do just that. Good luck!

2019-2020 recipient here. I had this question too and I asked them. Cost of attendance is not a factor in their selection process. They accept people who go to Yale with tuition well over $100k and also those who go to state schools with much lower tuition rates. So pick the school you wanna go to most and with the tuition that you’re willing to pay if you don’t get the scholarship.

To people who are applying this coming cycle: I think that when it comes down to choosing applicants with all the boxes checked— the grades, 0 EFC, disadvantaged background etc—-the essays and recommendations start to play a bigger role. I was super confident in my essays, like I feel like I never wrote any better. It made me feel like I’d def get the scholarship. Y’all probably already know this but to emphasize, try to not slack on the essays and make sure that the entire application package is as top notch as possible.

I forgot to say my EFC wasn’t 0. So considering there were others that had all of those things and still didn’t get it, there’s no real answer for why I was chosen over someone else. That’s why I think that people with an EFC and a lower GPA can still apply, it’s possible you can get it.

But anyone applying for next year, if you cannot afford to pay for the first semester or get loans for the first semester, do not count on this scholarship to pay by the deadline. We were in school a month before we found out and awarded, way past most school tuition deadlines. If the scholarship is literally the only way to pay you HAVE to figure something out otherwise you may end up dropping.

@JourneyNP are you in an RN program or NP program? I wonder if that made the difference

@tac730 I’m in an NP program. It does say in the application information package that NP program applications are part of one of the tiers I believe.

If you are passionate about underserved communities apply!
Nurse corps offers scholarships for nursing students-you must have an expected family contribution less than $5,000ish based on the newer Fafsa (a year earlier than it used to be) To actually be considered.
NHSC offers scholarships for primary care provider Students including MDs In family practice or psych, NPs in family practice or psych, and dentists. It is not based on EFC but, coming from and showing commitment to underserved communities is HUGE. This scholarship is to help providers afford an education and serve a community in need as a career.
I am lucky to be a scholar this year. This scholarship will pay for all three years of my np program tuition (Greater than $200,000- Don’t hesitate because of tuition.) and a Stipend each month. And my job is to work in an NHSC site immediately after school full time for 3 years which, may include relocating.
I think the strongest part of my application was The essays and detailed letters of rec. one of my letters was from a mentor I have known for 20 years who has witnessed a lot of the “underserved” part of my life. I think HRSA is pretty open minded, considering the part where I dropped out of college and didn’t go back for ten years.

Apply! Also, you can use these essays and lor for most other scholarships.

thanks for the encouragement and personal perspectives ! I definitely will apply now. Like you said, it wouldn't hurt && I think I am a competitive candidate so why not.. best of luck on everyone's nursing careers!

Hello,

I am planning on applying to the HRSA scholarship for 2020-2021. However, I just checked that my EFC is $10,004. My question is should I still apply? I have been accepted into UPenn's SON Direct-Entry program for PMHNP. I just read that for 2020 the EFC is $0-6,195. I am not sure if I should just wait until I am in my master's program to apply for this scholarship. I welcome any feedback and expertise on this scholarship. Thank you.

I don’t think you are eligible. However, you are a very good candidate for the hrsa nhsc scholarship. I am a PMHNP direct entry and I was awarded the nhsc scholarship last year.

Hello,

Thank you so much for your feedback and support! I will into this!

I applied last year and was denied. Would any recipients be willing to share their essays? Not to copy but just to see what they are looking for.
