How to shut up people who gossip !!!!!!

A very wise person swears that printing out the following and posting it around the workplace will drastically cut down gossiping and backbiting, or at least tick them off:

Great people talk about ideas.

Average people talk about things.

Small people talk about other people.

I love it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It reminds perpetrators that their poop does indeed stink.

Great people see the goal/main idea and strive toward it.

Small people nitpick, whine, and otherwise trip up progress.

So we're right back to where we were originally. You think calling people small, nitpickers, and whiners is lofty and mature? What was the point of changing the title if you were going to respond like this?

Reminders can be verbal or email without cluttering up what is supposed to be a professional setting and airing dirty laundry in front of patients/clients.

I thought so. Maybe I read it wrong??? At any rate, she's calling someone a whiny nitpicker. IMO, telling someone to shut up or calling them names is no better than gossip and in most cases is probably worse (unless the gossip is malicious).

Good question. How I personally define that line is this:

If I would feel comfortable saying what I was saying about the person in front of them, then I have not crossed the line into gossip.

If I would never say what I said in front of the person I was talking about then I am gossiping or backstabbing.

Please don't get me wrong, I have been guilty of gossip many a time. I just know when I am doing it by those parameters

I really like this and I agree, but what do you call it when you are willing/and do say the mean things to someones face and what is more hurtful? i try really hard not to ever say anything I would not want someone to overhear me say and when I hear someone else do it I have tried responding in a way to stop the conversation. but just like everyone else, if you find out some really good stuff on someone you know, you can't wait to share it with someone. I try to keep my gossiping to my husband.
