I will have about a 30-40 min drive each way once I begin NS. I'm wondering what is the best method to use to record lectures and listen to them in the car? I was thinking an iPhone, but I have no idea how much lecture data those hold. Any advice is much appreciated!

I record mine on my iPhone. I have one of those plug thingies in the car that I can plug my phone into and have it go through the stereo in the car, so that's how I listen to mine. Prior to getting this phone I recorded them on my iPod and burned them to a CD to listen to in the car (pre-plug in car LOL). Our lectures are two hours and I can record about 8-10 of them before I run out of space.
I forgot to add...I use the recording app already on the phone. The only drawback to using it is that if you want to download a lecture or send it to someone, it'll only let you send 8 minutes at a time. I am sure there is another way to do it, but I am admittedly not the most computer literate person out there LOL!

Before trying this, be sure you discuss it with your instructors and get their consent. Not everyone is willing to be recorded.

I agree with both of the above posters. We have one instructor that refuses recording, but the rest are generally fine with it. I've always used the recorder that came on the iPhone, and it doesn't use a lot of space. I've also used this to record myself reading things I've written for myself to help study (so I am reading, writing, reading aloud, and then hearing the same content).
As long as you have a way to listen to music from your iPhone in your car, you won't have any trouble listening to the lectures.

I bought an inexpensive recording device (30-40 dollar). At first I used to record with my iPhone but the sound wasn't that great, especially, when you sit farther away from the instructor. Also, on the iPhone I found it pretty hard to rewind just a couple seconds or a minute, since you have to slide with your fingers (try it out and you know what I am talking about). With my recording device the sound is great even from far away. I also have different folders for different subjects. Rewinding the tape is also great because I can set up if I want to rewind it for 10sec, 30sec, 1min, 5min when I press the rewind button. I can rewind or fast forward to exactly the time I want, which is pretty hard with the iPhone in my opinion. There are many other great features about my recording device. Recording devices are great because they are made for recording and I would recommend it to every student to get one.

Good day:
I've been using Amazon.com: Sony Digital Flash Voice Recorder (ICD-PX312): Office Products since last June; it works very well. I use the software that comes with the recorder to give the file a meaningful name; then I sync it to my phone. I've found my phone volume to be easier to hear along with having play lists (I pack the lectures tied to an exam as one unit) to work better than the recorder.
Thank you.
mind sharing what device it is?

It sounded like a cheap recording device. Any should do the job. Look at electronics store or on Amazon if you would like to see options.

I do this too...it's like making audio flash cards. Works great to listen to on my drives! :)
It's a Sony ICD-BX112, it's $39 on amazon. With this recording you cannot transfer any of your recordings to a computer. If you want that then you need to look at the $100+ versions, like pmabraham posted. In my experience it isn't necessary to transfer recordings to a computer because after an exam I always deleted them and I knew I would never listen to them again.
However, the speakers of the recorder are pretty good and you also can plug in headphones. Also, if you want to listen to it in the car with the car's speaker, you just need a simple aux cable that you plug in on your recorder and your car.
thank you
