How do your pronounce "peds"?

Published

Yes I am aware that this is the DUMBEST question ever!

No I am not a nurse, so don't hate on me for not knowing. But I do work in the OR and feel like an idiot for not knowing.

Anyway, it just dawned on me that I pronounce it "peds" half of the time and "peeds" the other half of the time.

Please spare me the embarrassment of another improper pronunciation.

"Peeds" are for kids, as in pediatrics. "Peds" are those little socks you wear on your feet! As in pedestrian.

Don't know why these two words are pronounced differently, but it's a good thin they are!!! Although a foot doc is a PO-diatrist, not a pediatrist!!!

Funny you mention pOdiatrist. I have always kind of said padiatrist. But heard on the radio an ad for the local podiatric society and they pronounced it, very carefully, POE-dee-atric. Never heard it enunciated so carefully, so your confusion is understandable.

OP - don't worry. There seems to be more than one way to pronounce so many words - an-jy-na or an-gin-a. Du-odd-en-um or duo-d-num. And who would think a word for urine would mean kids too :).

I think I just did, too, when I read that.

They have to do that so as not to be confused with a POD-iatrist (rhymes with clod) - the person you take your relatives to when they just don't seem like themselves lately and a very large vegetable-like encasement is found nearby.
