How do people complete ADN prerequisites in only one year?

Published

I don't understand how one year could possibly be enough, not work load wise but in terms of the school... For example the ADN program I am looking at, only has a few Requirments, A&P 1/2, College math, English Comp, and some computer applications class. But how could someone possible complete those in one year? In order to take A&P1 you need General Bio, in order to take general Bio you need Intro to Bio.. If I'm not mistaken that's already 3 semesters right there... How exactly would that work, well of course if there are NO prerequisites to the prerequisites than I understand but that's not usually the case!

Most of my pre req are already done because I had some of them done before I got into the track of getting into nursing school

I am finishing up first year and took all of prerequisites except one. I went full time. And now will hopefully be in program in Fall. It can b done but depends on school. I didn't need a prerequisite for A&p 1. I did micro and a&p same semester with eng and sociology. Then A&p2 and psych next.

My school has Bio 130, 131, 132, Eng 101, 102, Psych 111, 133, BHS, and a few others as pre-reqs. However, some placement tests waive some of these course, depending on how well you score, plus high schools are allowing students to take some of the pre-reqs in High School (my high school never offered this). So taking 4 classes both semesters, plus 2 classes in each of the 2 summer sessions would allow them to complete in one full year

At my school, (Saint Petersburg College) the requirements to enter the nursing program are as follows:

Composition 1

Psychology

Speech

Ethics

Statistics

Humanities

Anatomy & Physiology I w/ lab

Anatomy & Physiology II w/ lab

Microbiology w/ lab

Computer Applications

Reading o/ 95 on PERT placement

It has taken me four semesters to complete these courses.

It's possible to do at my school (Lower Columbia College), but only if you're willing to take a few difficult classes together. The science prereqs included Bio160, Bio241, Bio242, Bio260, Chem121 (Chem 100 is a prereq if no high school chemistry), and Nutr101. It was tough because you pretty much had to take two science classes per quarter along with whatever other prereq you could fit it (English, diversity, statistics, etc.). I went part-time and spent two years finishing my prereqs.

It's a balancing act: Quantity (course load) vs. Quality (GPA). Only you can determine the right pace for yourself. There are so many different variables at stake such as the need to take prep (non-credit) courses, need to keep working, previous knowledge & skills, etc. Some of us have the wherewithal to plow through with 18 hrs a semester but others need to take a slower, more deliberate pace. There is no "right" way.

I managed to take all of my prerequisites in 3 semesters (fall, spring and summer). The only reason I didn't finish them in 2 was because my microbiology class had a prerequisite of anatomy and physiology 2, and that had a prerequisite of anatomy and physiology 1, so I had to go in order. I also took all of my prerequisites concurrently with my nursing classes. Time is money.
