I thought it would be interesting for all of us to share our ages. I'm 27 and I'm pursuing nursing as a second bachelors degree.
I'm 35 and I hope to be entering nursing school in Fall 2017 (already applied and I'll know if I got in by July). I'll be doing an ASN program at a community college while dual enrolled in a RN-BSN program at a local university. I'll be one class away from finishing the BSN when I graduate from the ASN program in Spring 2019. I'm married with two kids ages 12 (almost 13) and 7. My oldest is autistic and needed a lot of support when he was younger, so I have very little work experience. I started prerequisites in Spring 2016, and I have been going a little slow so that I can get good grades and still spend time with my family. I have a prior degree in Anthropology which has helped speed the way through the prerequisites.
OK now for some geekery. I'm almost done with a statistics class, so I entered the data so far into my graphing calculator for some quick and dirty statistics on ages of responders to this thread.
n = 92
Min = 15
Q1 = 23
Median = 27.5
Q3 = 35
Max = 50
mean = 29.3
standard deviation = 8.8
I didn't do statistics on what stage of the process people are in, but at a brief glance, it looks like most of us are either doing prerequisites or just finished prerequisites. Several of us are in nursing school already, and a few have already finished and are already working nurses.
Soon to be 39 and started my pre reqs 2 years ago. I am done with them after this semester. I have a 3.9GPA and have applied to the nursing program twice only to be told NO both times. I also don't have a degree. I was in college right out of HS but didn't know what I truly wanted to do. I figured being that I have done a lot better academically than back then, that I would have scored a spot in the program. I am really wondering if its my age that they are against since there are people in my class who have gotten in with a few C's on their transcript but they are in their early to mid 20's. Has anyone else who is my age or older had any issue getting in?
Don't give up @ williteverhappen! I'm 30 and have a degree in landscape architecture (far from nursing). When I graduated in 2011, my GPA was not great at all (2.3). Your GPA is actually awesome. I started my pre-reqs. the summer of last yr and will be completing the last pre-req. this Spring. I was able to boost my GPA up some. I received an A in Micro and AP I and a B in AP II. I believe I will get an A in Prob. and Stats (final exam is today). I'm saying that to say, I was able to get into a nursing program even when I thought it was unlikely. I was rejected from one school and got in at another school. I don't think age matter but I would email the school to see why you received a rejection letter. I did that for one of the schools that rejected me and found out they split my regular GPA and my pre-reqs GPA apart (school didn't have an interview process so they only went by the #s they saw). Did the schools you apply to have interviews and/or entrance exams? Did you do well on the entrance exams? Just don't give up. The school I got in, had an interview process and I truly believe that helped me a lot. The nursing process is hard, so I try to encourage people to not give up or become frustrated because I felt like that too at one point but hearing positive words may help. Keep applying!
