How often do you take a break?

Published

Doing an assignment, interested in finding out if nurses take a break during their shift? Presuming the majority don't.

Ugh it bothers me when smokers get more breaks than non-smokers! Not that this is their fault, but management should let everyone get the same amount of breaks between smokers and non-smokers. I am not a nurse, but am my job, a bunch of us took "fresh air breaks" instead of ciggerate breaks. They never argued it though. I'm sure it is different in nursing since it is busier I'm sure!

sometime during my 12 hour shift I usually make my way back to the ladies room and sit for 2 minutes...I think that is considered a break, ususally I eat when I chart at the computer.

Well, I work in management and this is exactly one of the reasons I got off the floor! I get to work about 7:15. Take a break about 8:30.Another break about 10:00, 30- 45 minutes for lunch and another break about 2:00 and I go home 3:00-3:30ish.

I don't have to kill myself getting my work done. Very non stressful, I love it.:clown:

I've mostly always done nites, and as I don't want to be eating a big meal in the middle of the nite, I take something to snack on.

I now work in LTC, and eat my snack while I chart. Sometimes if it's really slow and quiet, I'll just sit down in the lounge for 10 or 15 minutes.

I've never liked being told that I HAD to take a break at such and such a time like they often do on days - maybe at that particular time I might have my mind around something or other and not want to leave it.

We get BREAKS?????

LOL:rotfl:

Where I work we don't even have a break room so I guess we are not suppose to take a break. I would love to have a lunch break without families asking me to get dad a cup of ice or play "could you answer a question?".

Same here. Our break room is outside. Gets cold out there!!:o

Boy are you lucky. I am in management and if I do not take a lunch, we could be written up. Some days I meet myself going.:uhoh3: :uhoh3:

Hey nurses, how about replying to the two polls, titled "Abused Nurses..." and " How many are glad they have a union?" Wouldnt it be unbelievable if we could tell our grandchildren that we survived the bad old days and gave our profession back its dignity?

 What's a Break?;)

I work Night Shift in a busy ER. We grab what we can, when we can because there is no float person. If your patients are caught up, you ask a co-worker to cover for awhile. That being said...........

We really ate good tonight. Everyone brought something in and we have been picking and munching all night :yeah:

Specializes in psych, geriatric, foot care.

I break when and if possible. Some days I get all my breaks somedays not. I find the 15min breaks too short to bother with somedays and the 30 min to long to be away from the floor - esp. when the work keeps on piling while I'm gone.

We are required to take a 1 hour break. You can split it up to 2 15min breaks and a 30 min lunch or a one hour break or a 15 min. breakfast and a 45 min lunch. They are going to take the time in pay from you anyway, the patient isn't going to die. There are numerous nurses and doctors on my floor the patient will not die. Take your break. I need to get away for awhile and relax my body. You are not a super hero, you can only accomplish what you can. And you won't accomplish much if you don't take care of yourself. Ask for help, you don't have to do everything yourself. The most important thing is that the patient is alive and stable. Also planning ahead helps so much. There has only been 1 time I couldn't go off the unit for lunch and that was durring a blizzard when we were extremly short staffed, but the cafeteria delivered us food for free and we got paid for our lunch break.

The last 15 min. break I'd had was in Sept. It was so unusual that I actually remember it!

Lunch breaks are extreemly rare. Today I was away from the floor for nearly 20 minutes. At the end of my shift the charge said, "Yea let's see, you had your lunch break." Grrrrrr......You owe me 10 min., lady!! Petty? Nope, over time that's a tremendous work AND monetary contribution to my facility! Heck, through the yrs. among the floor nurses it'd have been enough to actually hire help!
