Hi everyone. I am an RN at a hospital. I have worked on med-surg for almost four years since I graduated. About a month ago I had a chance to transfer to case management. Since I had only worked on the floor I thought it would be interesting to give it a try. Unfortunately I have quickly discovered it is not a job I am at all interested in staying in. Does anyone know how often you can transfer between floors at most hospitals? I hate to continue being trained in a job I know I don't want to do long term and would like to see about transferring back to my old floor. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

It is really specific to the hospital. I would think that for most, though, if they are still in the process of training you they would not want to continue using resources to complete your training if you don't intend to stay in the role.
If you are sure you do not like this new role then arrange a meeting with your upline as soon as possible and let them know in a kind and professional manner. They likely have an interest in letting you move back to your previous role.
Good luck ~

It's highly facility dependent. A lot of places have a policy in place that you cannot transfer during orientation, or within 6 months of hire, unless it's due to not passing orientation and then it's something that would be arranged with your supervisor and HR and the other department.

If they liked you enough to allow this transfer, and you want to go back back to med surg, I'd say there's a 99.99999% chance that you'll be allowed to.

We are not the people to ask, LOL. Ask your CM manager and your previous floor manager. If they say absolutely not, then start looking elsewhere.
Thanks everyone. I talked with my former manager and she is interested in having me return to the floor. Hopefully I can work that out!!
