Silly question, but I just wanted to ask.
Im applying for the nursing program at my college for Summer semester. I hear the nursing program is a lot of work and time studying.
You guys find yourself having to work and study a lot that it keeps you from watching sports or do anything?
Summer semester is when the NBA playoffs are and if the Cavaliers are playing that night, that's all I'll be able to focus on, lol.
I'm three weeks into my graduate entry summer school introductory courses (here in Australia), and I have been able to watch most of the soccer I usually watch. DVR is gold, I record games and use it as a treat when I have some time. Once the regular semester starts in March I'll have more time than over the summer semester, so I'm not too fearful about missing out on my sports...
Anyone planning to watch the olympics? So many events, too many exams!
It really depends on your priorities. I am a Senior (graduate in May!!!) BSN student and have found that I can take the time to do things that have nothing to do with school, but I generally have to really bust my a** to make up that time. So, if your priority is to be able to watch a game, then watch the game. but don't be surprised when you are completely stressed out in the 4th semester because you really could have used all of those missed opportunities to get prepared.
In regards to how different each semester is: First off, they all suck. Late nights, early mornings, lost social life. Each one has gotten measurably more difficult and stressful. The worst, so far, has been the 4th. I have no concern of having some sort of predisposition to psychosis because if I did, I would have had a breakdown during that semester! I can honestly say that last semester was the most stressful for both me and my partner. Luckily, he is an RN and knows what I am going through. He understands when I freak out because he has asked me to take out the trash and does not take it personally. Although, he does not put up with it and gets me in line rather quickly:)
However, it all comes back to priorities.
Silly boys! lol! It all depends on how you manage your time. Nursing school is a lot of work, but if you absolutely have to watch the playoffs, then just set aside time to study around the games. It's amazing how much you can get done during commercials, too.
And JayVArn, you're absolutely right about watching games in the CCU! The comatose seem to like whatever team you do!
First semester is all about the science and getting those fundamentals down. Second semester is all about clinical skills and assessment skills. So much damn reading...
Third semester is critical care, and thats one place where you do not want to screw up cause you spent too much time watching sports or playing games.
As for whether or not it is intellectually tough, it depends on your professor. Alot of my classmates went to a cc to take patho and pharm, where it was much easier than on campus. According to students from previous classes, those are the students that ultimately struggle more.
I hope its true. Lazy cowards...
Yea you will be able to study and work and watch sports and drink beer. You can always pick up the book during commercials instead of changin' channels (unless your watching more than one game).
Ok, so I know Im on the wrong board and I belong with all the dramatic anxiety ridden females but I am SO glad to know this!! If any of you end up in my nursing class I would LOVE to swap sports stories/info .....but my Colts lost and this was very upsetting.
Anyway, this definitely makes me feel better about the next 2 years of my life!!

This is a joke, right ? If watching sports on TV is more important to you than preparing for a livelihood where you'll be responsible for someone's health, you're going into the wrong profession.

It's half tongue-in-cheek; the main point is that you can have some small semblance of a life while in nursing school, contrary to what the doom-and-gloomers in the main student forum say.
What TheSquire said.
I was basically asking if people had actual free time inbetween studying and work compared to the stuff you hear about "throwing your social life away" or "never having to see your family" a lot of people seem to say about entering a nursing program.
I just chose sports since its one of the few things I like and its a guys forum.
That and I didnt wanna put something like "How much will the nursing program affect my drinking and partying?" lol
I dont care for that stuff anyway.
Realistically.... If I have to miss an important game for something like class or whatever, I'll do it.
Key word is "have". I wont miss anything for studying because I'll make sure to move my schedule so I can study enough before and/or after.

So how does the first semester compare with the second?
More studying? More clinicals? more work?
