How many prerequisites Did you take at once?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey all! I have a year until I finish my degree in Psych, but I have decided to become a nurse instead. I have 5 prerequisites that I need: nutrition, micro, physio, anatomy and chem. How many did you take at once? Any suggestions on how to go about the prerequisites? Thank you!

Take Chemistry before you take the others. Then take 2 at a time. That's my recommendation.

Thank you. Just out of curiosity, which class did you find the most challenging?

Chemistry, because my grade didnt count so I didn't take it as seriously and didn't read the text as much as I should have.

I found anatomy incredibly easy, the physiology side of it was a bit more difficult, but mostly because it was a lot of chemistry.

Nutrition, micro, and A&P all have a ton of chemistry, it's really important to have a good understanding because you don't want to have to teach yourself the chemistry 4 times while trying to learn the new material.

Chemistry will make Micro easier, take that first, for sure.

Don't over due it. You want to get as many 4.0s as you can. The grade on pre-reqs is the biggest factor in acceptance to RN school.

Whenever somebody posts this question on this site, I always advise if you have the luxury of some time, take each one individually - with the exception of nutrition perhaps. As somebody else mentioned these classes are the ones that count the most. In some schools, they don't care about nutrition but just depends on what school you're applying to.

Definitely take Chemistry first and by itself. If you've never had chemistry before, it's going to be a handful. Plus, all the other classes involve chemistry concepts in one way or another.

Be careful about Nutrition because in some cases it's harder than chemistry -- depending on the teacher. I got stuck w/ a teacher that turned nutrition into an organic chemistry class. No joke! Horrible experience & horrible teacher. Nutrition can be hit or miss. You might be able to pair Nutrition and Chemistry together in one semester without too much difficulty, but again......depends on the teacher.

I would take the other sciences in this order: Anatomy, Microbiology, and Physiology. You might even be able to do Micro first, then Anat then Phys. Physiology is pretty much the culmination of all the science prerequisite classes rolled into one. This is why I say take this one last and by itself. I know there are some schools that combine anatomy and physiology into one class and you take part 1 then part 2. If this is the case at your school, then do Micro first and then go into your anat/phys combination classes.

Good luck.

I took genetics and micro simultaneously. I also took A&P and Nutrition together.

I suggest you take A&P by itself in a given semester. Same goes for chemistry because these classes will take up all of your time and energy.

I took 5 prereqs in the summer term before I started nursing school, BUT... I had already been accepted based on my previous GPA. My school allowed you to apply without being done with prereqs so long as you could show you would be able to complete them before your start date. So my GPA on those didn't matter as long as I passed everything.

I think I did 1 the first term since I was working full time at that point. The next semester, I did 3 classes while not working. Then 2 classes while I was working full time at a less stressful job than I was working before.

I think the number of classes one can take on depends a lot on what you have going on in your life, how much you are working hours-wise, and how well you generally do in classes.

At my school, A&P 1 was a prerequisite for microbiology and it really helped having that foundation in A&P.

What you take together really depends on what kind of student you are and how much time you have to study. I took A&P 2 and microbiology (as well as 3 other classes) together and held onto my 4.0, but I didn't have to work a ton of hours at the time so I was fortunate.

If you're a good student, I'd say take Ctfdmags advice and take chem first, then the others 2 at a time. You might find yourself having to pair nutrition and A&P 1 - which is great, because both tackle things like cellular metabolism at around the same time.

As long as you're diligent and don't fall behind, I think you will be okay!

Depends on you. I took nutrition, psych, micro, a&p 1 during one semester while working full time. No probs. Then a&p 2 the next semester.

I am actually currently struggling with how many prereqs I should take together next semester, so I feel you. For my school Chemistry is the prereq or Micro and Physio so you have to take it first. I struggled with all the memorization in Anatomy and ended with a B, so I really need to pull A's in the rest of my classes. I can't decide if I should try to take Micro and Physio together next semester. I have a lot on my plate right now in my home life (I have 3 kids and a son that was just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes). It would only delay being able to apply to one of the 4 programs I am planning on applying to.
