How many other nurses do you work with?

Published

I'm currently taking pre-reqs so I haven't started clinicals yet, and I was just curious, how many other nurses do you work with during your shift at the hospital? I'm assuming it varies depending on which specialty you go into. I heard at night you usually work alone or with another nurse, but I was just wondering what it was like during busy day hours.

Specializes in Ambulatory Surgery, PACU,SICU.

At the start of my shift we have 3 RNs, and then from 1800-2030 I work with one other RN. It usually works out well, unless we have lots of recoveries and an add-on at the same time:o

my first rn job in a 17-bed pacu, we had staggered shifts to cover the busiest times in the middle of the day with more nurses. in the busiest times when all the beds were full, we ran the place with 1 aide, 2 lpns, and 4-5 rns, and a secretary. i worked a great shift, 1pm to 9pm, and the largest part of the staff exited by 3-5pm, leaving me with 1 lpn and the aide, unless it was a busier schedule than normal and some other lpn or rn would do a little ot.

on my first real floor nursing job as a na, it was me and an rn for 26 patients on 3:30-12mn. we ran our butts off.

In a small sub-acute rehab - we have 23 beds. Day shift is 2 nurses (RN or LVN), 2 CNAs plus a unit clerk (who is a nurse and can help out if necessary), and managers. Night shift is one nurse, 2 CNAs.

Big OR....around 30-40 nurses. Add in the techs, and there are around 60 people working together!

In my Surgical ICU with 16 beds and usually 11 nurses. The charge nurse has no assignment, and typically we have a unit secretary and 1 or 2 CNA's.

We are well staffed and run.

Specializes in Home Health Aide.

I have 2 years HH exp and I usually worked with 1 "nurse" that was on call and 1-3 other HHA. My current job I work with a lot of nurses because it's HH and I work in the office. So I get to chat with the field nurses all the time. I don't "work" with them I just get to enteract with them. I still consider it working with the nurses because I chat with them daily, call if their are changes on their patients orders and inform them about their notes. So on an average day I will talk to or see at least 3-5 great nurses. We have the best nurses at my job, they really are amazing and they do a wonderful job. :)

Depending on our census 13 to 18 nurses per shift. Always have help whenever you need someone.
