I am currently between jobs right now, and was wondering how many of you are in the same boat?
Are you unemployed or between jobs because of the problems in nursing? Finding it hard to find a job you like? Looking to change career fields? Wanting to leave hospital inpatient nursing?
I thought it would be nice to have a thread to go to for those specifically at a "transitional phase" in their life employment wise, especially the older population over 40..............and particularly over 50.
Do you feel your age is a factor in your being unemployed right now?
Thanks for everyone's responses. All are welcome! :)
I am currently unemployed. I worked in LTC and got hurt on the job when my MD wrote me off for a month I was told I no longer had a job. They are still fighting the workers comp. however so far I have won the hearings. I have been a nurse for 6yrs and have yet to have a good experience. I am working on my RN but in all honesty if I had it to do over, at least the way I feel right now, I would never have went into nursing at all.

Many a day, I felt the same way. We can't go back and change what is. All we can do is start from today and go forth with the experiences we've gained from our past....no matter how hurtful they've been to us.
If I could wave a magic wand and make my life better, I would do it. Nobody likes being down and out, especially when that "down and out" phase last too darn long, and never seems to go awayyyyyyyyyyy.
Keep the faith, and something you enjoy doing will come along. I keep telling myself this all the time lately........I'm still waiting, still looking...not giving up on me. :)
I'm currently in between jobs. I had to move home from Central WA because of the high crime and problems there (victim of crime three times).
I'm looking to possibly move to San Diego and work at a large hospital there. I really want to finish my BSN but I don't think I can stay in WA just to do that. I just worry that the non-resident tuition in CA will be so bad that I won't be able to do it there either.

Once you become a CA resident, you won't have that problem. It won't take long to become a resident there. San Diego is a beautiful city! I will always love Southern California! I hope and pray everything works out for you there. :)
I don't know if I should post or not, I am retired by choice. Most people seem to be out of work due to circumstances beyond their control. I was going to work till 62 but I decided to retire at 60. What inspired me to leave early? First of all came the complaints about my being to slow. Then came the increases in patient load. It went very quickly from 7/8 to 9/10 then suddenly for the first time in my life 11/12. It disturbed me only slightly when interns and residents complained about my being slow. It upset me very greatly the evening I tried to explain my slowness to an attending that was growing impatient by saying "I have 12 patients". His response to this was to say in a very snotty manner, "the LPNs in nursing homes have double or triple that number of patients". It was apparent it was time to go. My friend who is also a LPN on my old unit and is nearly 65 must bear up under frequent nasty remarks about her HOH. She is retiring shortly also. The enviroment was never very supportive and is growning worse by the minute.
:balloons: Welcome to Allnurses HeleneRN!:) You asked: "What are your thoughts about this increase in demand for higher educated nurses? How do you think this will affect those of us who have been nurses for so long?"IMHPO...I think the increase in demand for higher educated nurses is a good thing because sooner or later we all have to say "hello" then "goodbye" to that which enters our life. None of us can escape "change". :)
The effect it will have on those who have been nurses for a long time depends on their level of nursing education, time actively spent in nursing, and what each individuals goals for themselves might be. As for me, I'm an older nurse who feels "the change" in today's nursing. Age eventually becomes a challenge when working inpatient nursing, but when working management, working in the clinical education side of the house, triage nursing, and for other "away from the bedside" nursing jobs, our experience comes in handy and is still wanted...........IF we have continued our educational climb towards a masters degree. At least this is what I'm finding as I research job possibilities for myself.
I find that I need to return to school (I'm an Associate in Applied Science Degree graduate) with 133 quarter credit hours since 1987. Now that my children are grown, I am doing a lot of soul searching about what career choice to pursue now that I'm in my early fifties.
To the young nurses (young in age...under 40)...keep going until you reach a minimum Bachelor Degree in Education, then on for a Masters Degree. Get the degrees while you are fresh in the learning process of growing in your career. This of course is my own hindsight wisdom staring me in the face.:)

This is exactly what I would love to do when I'm finished with the ICU bedside experience. 50 is approaching in a several years, and working nights, my body is beginning to feel even older.
I've also considered hospice nursing. Actually I'm looking into it now part-time to balance out what I do in the ICU.
So sorry about your loss...
