I would like to find out what happens in hospitals around the world: if you have 3 nights how many days off do you have after that. There are no guidelines at our hospital in East London regarding that but I think there should be. I think there should be guidelines for how many days off you should have after one, two, three or four nights. Waiting to hear from people!
I suppose it differs even here in the UK. I was lucky and had a good manager and depending on where abouts we did the 3 nights depended what days off we had at the end. For example if we had nights mon-wed then we had the rest of the week off apart from a 7 and half hour shift either sat or sun. If we had the 3 nights at the end of the working week then we had mon-tues as days off as we generally had most of that week as days off apart from a 7 and half hour shift (this was to make sure we did 37.5 hours) I found it much easier to do 7 nights and then have the following week off and the same went for the part timers they tried to get their 2 week hours done in 1 week so had the second week off. Hope this makes sense
Also forgot to add :welcome: to the site and you should also check out the UK forum in the international section which can be found by clicking on the Local tab near the top of the forum
We dont' have set schedules, so there are no guidelines.
Sometimes I have many days off, sometimes I have one. Sometimes I work three in a row, sometimes I work a couple on and then a couple off, then one on; it just varies.
I'm sure some places have guidelines, but the places I've worked haven't. The only rule we have is that we can't be schedules 6 shifts in a row. And although our director won't let us switch for that, they have no problem calling us and asking us to come in to work on a night that would make it our sixth in a row....
I think the problem we have in the UK is we tend to work all shifts where my understanding of the US they work set shifts. This is an example of a week I once worked
Monday 07.15-14.45
Tuesday 13.30-21.00
Wednesday 13.30-21.00
Thursday and Friday day off
Saturday 13.30-21.00
Sunday 07.15-14.45
If I was working nights the following week I usually had the weekend off then worked 75 hours in 7 days and the second week off. Nice when wanting some extra time off without using annual leave/vacation time up
