How many classes and what classes are you taking?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everyone!!

I just starting taking my nursing pre-reqs (I already have English 101, but thats it). I work full time (I am 25) and am only able to take 2 classes at a time (This is going to take forever). My plan is to take the liberal arts classes 2 at a time and the sciences 1 at a time so I get a good grade. I was just wondering what everyone else is taking, and if there is any advice - are the sciences that hard? If I stick to my plan I should be dont with the pre-reqs by Fall 2011. I feel like that is too long. Can anyone offer me advice? Should I take more classes, I am just scred I may not get great grades. In fall I am taking english 102, and psychology 101 - then i was going to take a science class each semester and in the last 2 semesters finish my last 2 liberal arts classes. Is there anyone else on here that works full time and taking classes, if so what classes are you taking?

I sat down with the nursing advisor at my school and we planned all my classes up until I apply for the program fall of 09. Now I am taking sociology 101, Math 081, English 101 during summer session 1 and math 082 during session 2. Fall semester I am taking Psychology 101, Anatomy and Physiology 1, English 102 and Math 083. After that I will be out of developmental math, and will omly have 5 classes left until my admission to the program.

P.S. w/ 5 children and working full time now what you think about that LOL:yawn:

I think if they're little enough that they're going to try and be up your butt when you're tring to study, give them a pencil and paper and let them scribble. The first time I tried to go to college, I had to do this with my kids so I could study. Good luck!!

This fall I am taking:

Foundations of Therapeutic Interventions

Professional Nursing I

Anthropology

I have all my sciences and gen eds finished. My college has 4 "core" classes on top of that, and all majors need them completed before graduation. I had the first 2 done so the anthro is #3 out of 4. In January I'll take my next 2 nursing classes along with core 4. After that it's just the rest of the nursing courses.

Just be realistic about what you can handle academically. Since you havent taken sciences yet, I would go into it slowly. Take your time and do well. Nursing programs are more competitive than ever right now and even people with 4.0 GPA's are not always being admitted.

Specializes in none yet.

Fall:

- A & P I

- Gen/Bio chem (not looking forward to that one)

- Developmental psy.

Spring:

- Microbiology

-A & P II

That covers all the pre reqs I need. I have a BA so, everything else is completed.

Good luck to you. It is doable. I worked full time and I have a teenage son and it took me 3+ years to get all my prerequisites done at night. I took at most 3 classes a semester, and at the end when I took Anatomy and Physiology. I took them alone. Chemistry and O-chem are the classes that I would not suggest taking anything too intense with, and many people warned me about Microbiology as well. The slow measured pace worked for me because I was able to get all A's and that made it possible for me to get into nursing school. I just finished my first year of nursing school and I love it. It may seem like it will take forever, but it is worth it. Just keep telling yourself that you will get there. Give yourself frequent pats on the back and take time to decompress with fellow pre-nursing students. Some of the people I was friends with during prereqs are in school with me now and we are the best of friends and it is so wonderful to have the support and friendship during a very stressful time.

Best regards,

Jean

said a lot Jean!

I have been working on my prereqs since 2005 but have had to take various semesters off for life things. With that said, it seems like I still have a ton of prereqs to take. So far I have taken English Comp I & 2, Psych, Word Processing, Intro to Windows, Pre-Algebra, and Electronic Spreadsheets. This fall I am planning on taking A& P I and either Oral Communications or Algebra. I would like to take more than 2 classes at a time, but I'm like you and am trying to maintain a great GPA. The two nursing schools that I'm applying to both require high GPA's of 3.75 or better, due to the amount of students applying.

OG...some of you are making my head hurt with those course loads. It makes me very grateful that I only have to take 12 credits to maintain full-time status.

I have almost all of my prerequesites done already. I'm taking Microbiology right now (summer) and I need Anatomy and Sociology for this fall and I can apply for nursing school Fall 09.

I have 4 classes in the fall and they are A&P 2, History, Biochemistry and Foods and Nutrition. Then, in the spring i will have arts and humanities 1, english comp 2, microbiology, and intro to sociology.

I am taking the summer off and in the fall of 2009, i will take arts/humanities 2, speech, psych, and stats. Then finally in the spring, i can start the bridge nursing courses at my school.....i can't wait

!!!!!!!!

Wow...I'm glad I was able to get my spot even though I have those few prereqs to get through yet. Sounds like I'm very fortunate in that.

I've been going since 2003 to school...only taking 1 class at a time...for a moment didn't know if nursing was for me (basically got scared cause I did poorly in a science class)...ANYWAYS if all goes well 1 year of pre-reqs and that's it! In September I'll take chemistry 121 (intro to chemistry), psychology 202 (lifespan psychology...online class), and math 096 (elementary algebra)....I'm also going to work full time and I have a child...the issue before was money...which isn't an issue anymore cause of financial aide...now it looks like the issue will be time...however my mom and boyfriend are more than willing to help with the baby...BUT I'm not going to worry about time until it becomes an issue!

Good luck!! Sounds like you have a lot on your plate, but it also sounds like you're preparing to work hard to get what you want. I sincerely wish you the best!!
