How low would you go?

So, an acquaintance of mine who lives in Florida's Space Coast area, a newly minted psych NP, e-mailed to ask for my thoughts about a full-time psych position that she is considering applying for.

In the spirit of fraternity and goodwill, I'm not going to tell you how much the pay is yet. First, you need to be sitting down and with no hot beverages in your hand. And all who take medications for blood pressure and nervous conditions should have had taken these.

What shocks me the most about this isn't so much the position itself, but the fact that she's seriously considering it. Her family situation is such that she is unable to move right now, and she cannot find another NP job though she has been looking for quite a while. I want to tell her that she would be better off staying at the bedside as an RN (where she's currently making more money anyway) than to stoop to applying for this job. But maybe someone else has a different opinion for a new grad in her type of situation who can't find an NP job.

H to the E to the double hockey stick no! No way I would apply for that. That must be a typo especially given the population and expectations. I would stay working as a bedside RN and wasting for something else to come along or do some per diem work as a np. Medicare home visits is a good way to get your foot in the door with some experience.

No. Just plain no. But would not be surprised to find out that there are applicants and that they hire someone at that salary. Deplorable.

:down::shy: this must be a joke right? But in all honesty it happens, a friend of mine in central FL. got offered a NP position at a Derm practice starting at $56k but then after 3-6 mon it would be bumped up to a whopping $60k. Patience is the key when job hunting ...a good job will come along she may even have to commute for a bit. But good jobs are out there, tell her to hang on.

Goodness, gracious no!

I am not even an NP and have no plans to become one. However, my current salary as an RN case manager in low cost-of-living Texas exceeds the NP rate quoted on that employment advertisement by a significant amount.

And with that population? Are you kidding me? It makes me sick that NPs would even consider doing this when I made almost twice that with my ADN. As I have said before with many things nursing we tend to be our own worst enemy. However I might consider applying just to put my salary expectations out there and bust a few balls. :D

Unfortunately, I've seen pathetically lowball NP salaries in Florida, the state where people are supposedly paid in sunshine.

The low pay is most likely not a typo or mistake. Also, a number of new NP grads in that area would actually accept the position out of desperation or foolishness.

At least it says the salary is negotiable ...so there's a little hope? I wouldn't accept that pay even with my lowly ASN.
