How do you all like the pain scale???

Published

I confess, I hate the pain scale. It's alright for some folks who like to quantify everything, but with many people I find that it is an annoying way to communicate. I hate this mandated, cookie cutter type of interaction. It reminds me of going to Safeway and having them all say the same lines to you everytime. I think the pain scale is overrated and utterly annoying.

Maybe because there are other side effects to long term opioid usage besides constipation?

When I asked why, I meant "What other side effects did you have in mind?" :p

Triage RN you have a great sense of humor and would be a hoot to work with.

How do I feel about the pain scale? I don't like it. I'd just rather ask if someone is having pain and do they need pain meds.

LOL, what a concept! Maybe you can market it?:D

:o I work at a LTC where they want us to always use the pain scale before giving them a pain pill. These elderly people are confused and in pain and then we have to aggravate them with the pain scale too. Most of them don't seem to understand it and we really don't have time to explain it over and over again. I hate the pain scale! :angryfire :angryfire

:chuckle So did I! I sincerely meant maybe theres others and what are they?

(some I can think of......., nausea , lightheadedness, vertigo, dry mouth, anxiety, siezures w/ demerol, rebound headaches, are there others?)

I know for fact that dry mouth doesn't go away w/ repeated use. Pasty mouth....yuck. :p

Think long term, if someone has worked to very high doses of narcotics they have been on them chronically.

Depression

Anorexia/Malnutrition

Liver Damage

Addiction

Injury related to lack of painful stimuli.

etc. etc.

Pain management is an interest of mine, but I've never heard of any of these as side effects of long term use. Could you point me toward some research on these effects? :specs:

I was thinking more of the immediate side effects rather than long term damage.
