How do you keep up wtih all the reading???

Actually, nynurse, I don't. At first I did keep up with it but now I just skim it. I try to read the nursing process, critical thinking, and S/S, nursing implications first, then if time allows (which it doesn't) I go back and read the whole thing. Most of the other stuff is a step by step of how everything works and a review of anatomy. My Med/surg book came with a CD-rom that has chapter outlines and sometimes that is all that I get to cover before the next lecture.

Good luck to you NY! I haven't started nursing school yet---I'm so envious!! I'm sure I'll change my tune when I start getting my assignments, lol.

If your program is anything like mine, there is no humanly possible way to keep up with all of the reading. I skim, and the parts I have a difficult time understanding are the parts that I really read. I depend upon my notes a whole lot. :) Good luck!!

I had to read it all. I am a B student who works hard to be one of those. I just could not skim in and retain it.

I know it is hard. I am in my graduate program and for one class I have to read 5 books!

I don't either. Sometimes I don't even look it over, as most is covered in class. You start reading that amount of material and you'll become confused.

You'll find out when you're into it more. Some have to read, some don't. I guess I'm lucky in not having to. I'd never be here if I did!

First semester, I read everything assigned and made outlines of the material as I read. I made a B. Second semester I went to lecture then read anything I didn't understand. I only pre-read a few times because of the huge amount of paperwork we had to complete. I made a B. This semester, I have read one section of the probably 20 that have been assigned. I plan to try to catch up on it a little at a time--I'd like to make an A this semester. I don't know if the reading will help with that or not.

As far as how to keep up with it...keep your book with you all the time (except maybe at the grocery store). Mark the sections you need to read next and read a few paragraphs when you are between classes, on lunch break, eating supper, on the toilet, etc. Eventually you will get it all done. For me, I need to read the section a day or two before it is covered in lecture to really get any use out of it. If I read too far in advance, it leaves my brain. If I read after the material is covered in lecture I find myself skimming, skipping, and drifting off because "we just talked about that stuff".

:chuckle wow! I needed that! You learn how to skim and target information rather quickly. By the time the tests come up, you know what to be looking for and what to be avoiding completely!

I had my first Nursing class on Wednesday and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there really isn't going to be as much reading as I expected. Yes, we have a ton of HUGE books...but the syllabus is very detailed and specifically tells us which pages we will be responsible for. For Friday, we are covering 3 more chapters...but I only have to read about 40 of the pages. Works for me!!!

By the way...we'll be covering all/most of it in class anyway...so a good skim of some parts will probably be okay too. As I see it, the texts will be used more as reference tools.

The one area that we really do have ALOT of reading is Pharmacology. We will be responsible for 40-some pages on anti-infectives alone..... Oh well, that's makes sense, though.

When I went to x-ray school in addition to the regular text books we had to purchase a set of Mosby's Radiologic Atlas. 4 books about 22" long by 10"wide. So we all but them and took them to class, and took them to class and took them to class. Finally one day one of my fellow classmates ask our Physics instructor if he could let us know which book we would need for the class so that we could stop toting these books around. Being the non-joking kinda physics nerd that he was his reply was, "oh I never said you had to bring them to class I just said you had to buy them."

I was reading ahead earlier this week, highlighter in hand. I put the book up and 'had a life' for a few days. Picked it up again last night, and wondered WHO IN THE HE!! had highlighted in my book!!! :rolleyes: It was ME! But I'd forgotten almost all of what I'd read. Oh, joy...
