How to keep from forgetting what you learned in school....

Published

hello I have stopped working as a nurse in a medical surgical floor to take care of my children. I worked about 3yrs and now I feel as if I am forgetting everything. I did do perdiem for about a yr but not much. I don't even have time to read journal articles. What can I do?? I have tons of people ask me questions that I knew I had the answer somewhere in my head but I feel so rusty. Help!! What can I do? :uhoh3:

I forgot to ask if any mom out there can help me manage my time better to have a chance to read. I have two small children under the age of 3ys. Thanks :o

Any info that you do not use, you will eventually lose some of it. I work in LTC and there are a lot of things I do not remember about meds that I do not use a lot, procedures that we do not routinely perform, ect. If something comes up, I always ask someone who knows, check reference books, ect. As for the keeping up on your reading of articles, CEU books, ect, I like to use my kids' nap time for things like that. Of course now my children are a little older: 8, 4, & 2. Most of the time only the 2 year old naps but the other two can play together while I am reading or working on educational things. A lot of time, I will have them sit down for quiet time in the afternoon when the baby is napping so all can have some quiet "rest" time, even if they are not actually sleeping. Especially if it is a hot day. I let them play in the morning, have quiet time when it is hot, then we are back outside when it cools off in the evening. Also I do not know how hectic bedtime is in your house, but usually very hectic at mine. If I have something I would like to do, I will start bed time maybe a half a hour early then I have maybe half an hour to get some reading in before I go to bed.

I never could find time to read when my kids were under three (they are two years apart) except for when I took a bath after the kids went to bed. I knew I could not divert and do something else if I am in a tub of water.

Thank you guys for replying. My kids are 17 mos apart and the 2yr-old doesn't nap. I try really hard to get him to sleep and there are days he will b/c he has had a wk of no naps. I just don't know how people do it who go to school. When they are in bed by 8pm I am so tired all I want to do is relax. I try reading but I fall asleep. Then my DH feels neglected b/c that is our time and wonders why I want to read when I am home and not in school. Unfortunately in CT they don't require CEU. I told myself that I will do at least 12 credits each yr. I just feel that I can't fit it in. I want to do my graduate degree and have no clue how I am going to do it. IS so hard being a mom, wife, and everything else. Thanks again
