How do I find private duty work outside of an angency?

I am a RN and I work full time at a major hospital. The population we treat are poor and uninsured. I would like to find a private duty job outside of an agency. No reason to give the agency half of my paycheck. I know most people find private cases from there job. However if you cant what are your other options?

My onetime supervisor got her private duty cases through word of mouth, starting from one case that she was working through an agency that went private. She said she was rather shocked to hear that her name was being discussed among prominent people in an affluent community, but those were the types of homes she was working in when I met her. Most people get private duty cases through word of mouth, newspaper ads, and job boards like craigslist. Read ads for posted positions and post your own ad for responses. Have not heard of anyone who marketed themselves with hospital discharge planners, but I would assume that this would be a viable option, along with printing up business cards and taking them to places that seniors, especially, congregate. Good luck.

Anyone have examples of a flyer that I could pass out to people advertising my private duty services?

Consider these sources: social workers/case managers, members of associations like the MDA, ads in church bulletins. Does anybody else have any other ideas? B

Thank you these are great ideas.

I do not think it is wise to send out cards or any info when taking care of a pt or discharging them. That would be a conflict of interest and a good way to get fired. Not while the patient is on hospital property.

A friend in Hawaii was recently fired for doing the same.

Usually there is a discharge planner our case manager that works at the hospital that does referrals to the local agencies. Maybe you could speak with that person and get work.

Cap-c in NC offers hours to patients including respite. Sometimes you can get paid by them if the family doesn't go through an agency.

Other than that, I would try craigslist and care.com. Since hospitals here set the family up with an agency, it's rare that the family pays directly. Also, private ins pays better than medicare/medicaid.

I work through an agency so I don't deal with taking my own taxes out, not having work if the pt goes in the hospital, etc. But if you can find a good fit, it could work better for you. Also talk to agency nurses if you know any. The agency nurses usually know when a family is about to change agencies and the nurse could mention your name to them.

Good luck.

I would like to do the same thing............ so I am assuming one must carry their own , yes? I would be helping a woman at home after her knee surgery, with bandage changes, bathing, etc. I would charge her by the hour, and have her pay me cash or check, then take care of my own taxes if I make enough from this job. I have never done this sort of thing, and am not currently with an agency or hospital. I am looking for work, and feel like this would be some good experience with money in the interim. Am I completely clueless?

No, you are not clueless. Everyone has to have anyway, no difference there. Just research how to do the tax deductions. The federal part is easy. You probably will not be earning enough to make quarterly tax payment necessary, but look it up on the IRS website anyway. I was lucky when doing private duty as the employer's CPA took out my taxes just like any regular salaried employee. Actually, doing private duty is better than working through an agency because you will circumvent that automatic pay cut to pay their overhead. Good luck.
