How to be in the honors society for nursing

If you're talking about Sigma Theta Tau, you get invited to join if your school has a chapter and you meet the basic criteria. You have to have completed at least half the nursing curriculum. The academic criteria are that you be in the top 35% of your class and have at least a 3.0 GPA (and no history of academic integrity/honesty issues). They've watered the criteria down in the last decade or so; the standards used to be higher.

Same as any other honor society? Scholarships, resume fodder, looks good when applying for Master's programs, special tassels at graduation, etc.

I have been in one, and a bunch of other honors societies. For one I still get letters asking that I donate $$$. The others did not help finding or securing the job. All my employer cared about if I graduated and had my teaching license. But yeah, special tassels were nice. Though nobody cared.

Some individual STT chapters are v. active, and provide scholarships for members to further their education as well as good networking and mentoring opportunities (including re: job-hunting). There are places in the country where it does matter to employers whether someone is an STT member, and you never know when that might give you an edge over another applicant. In a lot of academic and leadership nursing jobs, it's an expectation that is practically a job requirement. But, for the most part, it's a personal choice.
