How about the HARDEST job in nursing?

Published

As a spin off to the "easiest" thread, how about the "hardest" job?

thre is an old saying to: WHEN YOUR BRAIN IS TIRED WORK YOUR BODY, WHEN YOUR BODY IS TIRED WORK YOUR BRAIN

the problem with nursing is that you have to work both to the max at the same time

if push came to shove med surg would get my vote

I am usually elbow deep in pooh, so that seems easy from where I stand. But I can not imagine pediatric hospice. Done geriatric hospice, but peds, gosh I can't look at a infant child CPR chart without crying.

I don't know. I've really only done Med/Surge and while it is a pretty hard area, my hospital generally has GREAT nurse-to-patient ratios, so for me it isn't all that bad. If I worked in a larger hospital with wider ratios all the time, that WOULD be hard. I mean, because WE'VE been known to go up to 1:9, but that's only when there is absolutely NO other help to be found. If I had to do that all the time.... no way.

For me personally, the hardest areas are any areas with frequent emergency situations. So, ER and L/D are areas that I find horribly stressful.

I am sitting here drinking coffee, recovering from two very long days on my med/surg III rotation. No food, no water, no potty, no sitting, it was busy. My nurse I was working with said when he was in school, they were expected to work up to 9 pts by graduation! I know some of you do that, I don't know how you do. THank goodness for the 5 pt limit here in California. So I don't have much experience anywhere else, but I think med/surg can be a killer:eek:

Emotionally, this would be it for me.
