So I emailed a hospital with all 3 level NICUs located about 45 mins from me in Greenville, SC called Greenville Hospital System in the Bryan Neonatal Intensive Care unit (if anyone has or is working there), about shadowing at there NICU, and possibly PICU and Oncology Peds as something to do over the summer and to see if nursing is truly for me :)
Well anyways I was wondering how you guys felt about students (Junior/High School) shadowing you? Would you see it as a teaching experience or a nuisance? I always feel like sometimes I'm getting in the way by shadowing
Thanks in advance!

One of our hospitals has a "nurse camp" for high school students over the summer. Its one day, and students get to visit several different units. If things don't work out with the hospital you contacted, ask around some of the other hospitals in the area and see if they offer a similar program. The health occupations class teacher could probably give you an idea of where they go.
How do you handle HIPAA with high school students? Those under
18 can't legally sign a paper attesting to their compliance. They're
minors. They're under no binding legal constraints to keep patient
information private. If patients are asked and give permission for a
minor to shadow their care, are they also informed that that there
is really nothing anyone can do if that minor violates HIPAA? That
would be true informed consent, wouldn't it?
"Well what is HIPAA?"
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996
As a future nurse, you need to become familiar with this act, esp
if you get involved in shadowing and
get access to private information about patients.
How about some of the other posters who have shadowing programs
with minors? The question above indicates that many if not all of these
minors don't even know what HIPAA is? Even if they are informed about
it, there are no legal or professional consequences for them if they don't
follow HIPAA privacy rules. Is this just about recruiting? How does one
balance patient privacy rights with a professions recruiting needs?

The forms I had to fill out have about a half page explaining HIPAA and it states that the observer and the nurse have to limit shadowing activity to go along with HIPAA you both have to sign, etc.
futurenursekaturah -- are you a nursing student? a high school student? i'm not so concerned with nursing students in nursing school. i am more concerned with those under 18 years old, those with no ethical codes that ground their work, nor licenses.
i'd be curious -- did the forms specify what activities go along with hipaa and which don't? and i question the use of those under 18 years old signing such a form. \
any thoughts from those with these kinds of programs in place?

I don't mind students that shadow me but I do expect interest, enthusiasm and some decent questions.
