How to get the BON to talk to me about misdmeanor?

Nurses Criminal

Published

I see many posts with people asking for advice about what to do about a criminal history. The response is always "contact the BON in your state." The problem: the WA BON will not talk to me about it.

I will be starting NS in the fall and I dont know what to do. I have a misdmeanor from 2004 in FL when i was 14. I called the BON and was told that i cannot speak to anyone there about licensure until I complete nursing school and apply for a license and that no one could tell me if my crime is an automatic no-go. she said that there was no department or laws that i could reference. My only option is to go to school and apply for the license and see where the chips fall.

my question: Is this normal? should i have been allowed to talk to someone? or is this just the way it is? How do you get them to talk to you?

Thanks. The dean at my school said she had a student last year who had a DUI, and that she had to go appear before the board. They just ask her a few questions and gave her the license. So maybe that is good news for both of us. Good luck talking to someone at the BON. I hope you have better luck than I did. They just kept sending me to a voice mail. When I finally did speak to someone, she wasn't much help. I'll email you.

Thank you : ) That gives me hope! I look forward to hearing what happens for you and will be keeping you in my thoughts.

I start school this Sept, and Im nervous too because I have a misdemeanor from 1998. I payed for my criminal background/sex offender check last week and Im waiting for the results. Im praying this will not prevent me from not starting school. Good luck to everyone

Hi Carrie...I wanted to stop by and check to see how things have progressed for you with the TN BON. Have you gotten to take your NCLEX exam yet? I hope all is going well for you.

Yes, I did take NCLEX in June. I received my RN license in July with no problems. I have been working in a small hospital on the med surg floor for the past month. My convictions didn't keep me from getting my license and so far hasn't kept me from getting a job. I have been very fortunate. Don't let your past hold you back from what you want to do. It is possible, just don't give up!

Hey Carrie not sure if you still get on here, but I am in TN and just scheduled my nclex. Previous dui in 2011. I sent all the required paperwork to the board. Just wondering if after you passed the nclex they had to review everything? Or if you just just got you license? I'm already working and finishing RN orientation and they are depending on me passing and getting my license. I'm just worried they will delay the process and have to review.

I'm in the same situation. Did you guys got their license? I live in TN also.

did you get your license? I'm applying in 3 weeks and I have a DUI from 11 years ago
