How far does everyone commute to work?

Published

I am interviewing soon with a teaching hospital approx. 60 miles from my home. I've never worked at a teaching hospital and feel this would be a good opportunity to increase my skill level and knowledge base. This is the closest teaching facility to where I live. With the price of gas and hour and a half drive I wonder if it is a good idea to consider working there. How far does everyone commute to work? Anyone drive a considerable distance? What are the pro's and con's. Thanks!

1/4 of a mile. I couldn't imagine driving 45 min to the next town to work. I love my minuscule commute!! My husband- commute of 6 blocks. That is one part of our lives right now I have no complaint in!!!

It takes me less than 15 minutes to get to work. Thank goodness!

It used to take me 40 minutes (or 26 miles) to get to work. Two months into this job, I found some back roads and shaved 10 minutes (3 miles) off my commute. It's still no bargain, but at least it is not taking me three hours a day VIA car, train and bus (one way), when I was working in the City.

NEVER again! :(

It takes me 4 minutes to get to work, but I am a district nurse so I travel all day, the irony of it.

Being on the hiring end, I could not justify hiring a nurse who lives so far away from a facility & expect them to meet on-call requirements. How are you guys able to meet them & how quickly are you expected to show up?

I used to work about 30 miles from home, and now work about 5...am SOOO glad I made the switch! I changed jobs in March right about when gas started getting really expensive (that's not WHY I switched, but a great bonus), and it's WONDERFUL being home in bed before my shift is even over at my other job!

I live 77 miles from work it takes me approx 1 hour and 25 min one way. I took this job before the gas crisis and I took it because of the experience and opportunity was a once in a life time chance. no I dont like the commute but I work 4 days a week. so that eases the pinch a little. I also drive a Hhr that is getting about 30 miles to the gallon. I have the problem of the small community hospitals only want to pay me $18.00/hr for 19 years experience or I can drive a minimum of 1 hour to several different bigger hospitals that will pay me what I am worth and moving is not an option at this point. when I was working in labor and delivery I would schedule an extra shift to cover my call. instead of actually taking call and if I got called off for low census then they knew it was going to take me at least an hour to get there. My coworkers understood and worked with me. I have been thinking about changing jobs to get closer to home but it would only be closer by 25 minutes so my decision is really do I want to give up my new experiences or keep on going with this and hope for the better.

20 miles each way, takes about 25-30 minutes. I work 12-hour shifts though, so typically I'm only there 3-4 days a week.

I travel 45 minutes each way about 35 miles. I work only weekends 12 hour nights, I get paid for 36 hours though. And unfortunately I drive an SUV, Nissan Xterra. But with my pay I make up the gas after about The road is all rural, I am talking cows, and horse smelling manure galore at times. So the winter travel can be dangerous, but I can sleep in one of the oncall doctor rooms if I need to. And dad is with the kids.

I do two on call shifts every 6 weeks.

I took this job so that I could go back to school fulltime to get my BSN-MSN and not have to lose to much time with my kids, and also not spend 10 years getting my degree taking 1 class a semester.

My goal is to be an educator.

But ultimately the decision is up to you.:D

I'm so glad to read everyones input. I interviewed today at the teaching hospital. Their full time requirement is 3 12's one week and 4 the next week. WOW!! That's alot of driving. Most places iv'e worked have been 3 12's per week. Also on top of all of those hours I would have to start in high risk OB because i'm a relatively new nurse with only two years of experience. Even though i would learn more there than anywhere else, I've chosen to work at a tiny rural hospital closer to home (30 Miles) At this point in my life I want more family time. Maybe when my oldest graduates high school in a few years i'll devote more time at a facility like the teaching hospital. Hope all is well with everyone here and again i appreciate your input!:redpinkhe

I live about 70 miles from where I work. It takes me an hour and 10 min to get to work. I leave about an 1 1/2 before worke so I spend about 3 hours getting and coming from work. I love the way to work. The drove home can be tough at times. I love where I work. All the local hospitals near me are owned by the same company and this is where I did clinicals. I would not consider working there for many reasons. So the drive for me is worth it. I would say a good portion of people who work where I do have at least a 30min drive, many even longer than that. So I guess you have to make a pro and con list from your own reasons and experiences. Good Luck to you!

I drive about 25-26 miles each way to and from work. I doubt I would work any further from a hospital then this. It takes me about 20-30 minutes to drive to work, depending on traffic. I also have to battle city traffic when I get closer to work (I work in the city, live in the suburbs).
