How Far Do You Travel For Work?

Published

I live in WV but recently accepeted a job at LTC facility in PA. Living very close to PA/WV state line I did not see this as a huge issue. Becuase after searching for work in my town and surrouding towns for 8 months and not finding squat for employment I was out of options. It's a 23 mile drive one way to my new job. It takes me about 30-35 minutes to get there and that is after working my way thru numerous stop lights to get out of town and stopping to pay the toll if I take that route. My mother is pi**ed that I am driving 23 miles one way, even tho I am 28 I still respect my mother and I understand her fears for me driving that distance after working a afternoon shift. I don't even live at home. LOL. I've tried explaining to her that there are no jobs where I live, unless I want to work at a doctors office and the drs offices around here do not pay anything. I would be making 7 dollars less and hour if I took a job in a physicians office here. Personally I don't see 23 miles as that huge of a commute if I will be making good money. Am I wrong? How far do some of you travel to get to and from work?

i go downstairs, pick up breakfast in my kitchen, and walk to the office in the back of my house, right behind the living room. done. worst traffic hazard is the inevitable dead prey left behind by one of the cats. :uhoh3:

0.7 miles your mom would love it :)

I travel to four different dialysis units, have racked up >25,000 miles in 10 months. I trade cars in every 3 years and I have >90,000 in 3 yrs.

36 mi one way, about an hour drive. I usually work NOC shift, so the drive home can be rough. 12-hr shifts are good then, because I'm really only commuting 3-4 days out of the week.

I only drive 4 miles to work, but I also do home visits and have driven as much as 100 miles one way -- that's unusual but 30 to 40 miles one way is pretty common for me. I don't mind -- I'm getting paid for my time, and if I use my own car, I'm getting paid for mileage too.

Specializes in CCU, cardiac tele, NICU.

153 miles one way. I work 3 in a row, rent a room in the city where I work, and go home on days off. Tell your mom you lucked out. :)

And on a side note, if anyone reading this is a hiring manager in NorCal, please call me. :D

I travel 25 miles one way.

32 miles one way for my primary job in a not so gas efficient truck :) I just purchased the truck because I have a horse trailer to pull, so getting a smaller vehicle is out... And where I live, 4 wheel drive is a must have.

Tonight I actually was looking into room shares in the area of my hospital... Figured if I could find a place for cheap, it would equal out what I would save on gas but help save me on time for sleep. But then I started thinking... I work at an inner city hospital. My house is out in the country, very peaceful and all I hear are birds, some times the horses and an occasional tractor. Especially working nights, sleeping in the city during the day doesn't sound that appealing...

So then I thought about finding a close campground. My horse trailer has live in quarters on the front... Thought I could find a place, drop my trailer there if I am working a three to four day run... But no such luck so far. My drive isn't horrible, but I work 12 overnight shifts... And making that drive a few days in a row with nothing but sleep in between can sometimes feel like a waste. Well, I guess my cats probably appreciate it when I feed them... It's the one thing I guess I am good for them :)
