It is always difficult when families are not happy and/or irritable. I usually find being extra kind and listening to them and some education as needed (and within scope of practice) to be helpful some of the time. Most of the time, families want to be listened to and acknowledged.
And by all means if that is not working I get either the charge nurse, management or the doctor involved.
I agree with Crush. I'll ignore their unpleasantness and talk to them as intelligent people, informatively. Usually they come around pretty quickly.
Many people haqve had less than stellar experiences with the healthcare system, including me. Also, there are people with rough manners, but they shouldn't be written off.
