How to become an RN in CANADA?

Published

Hi everyone, Im a registered nurse from the Philippines and very interested in pursuing nursing profession in Canada.

How do i become an RN in Canada? I was able to checked some threads regarding CRNE exam which took place in Canada only 3x a year. How can i apply for CRNE exam and what are the requirements?

Thanks so much

I have been qualified for 5 years now, i worked as a renal nurse for three years looking after acute, chronic, transplant patients and also did heamodialysis and capd. I know work in ICU and Coranory care units but am not sure if i'll have enough child hours or mental health hours from my training as we only did 2 weeks placement for each. Do you know how many hours are required of practice and theory for both in BC? How long does the process take generally? Any ideas?

They will make their basis on your transcripts, only way really is apply to the province and see what they say. If they say everything is OK then on average processing times is approx 6 months, you will also need a medical before they will issue you with work permit.

Thankx very much, out of curiousity again:) Is it easier to apply to canada or the states? Or just very different processes?

Different process although visa wise is quicker for Canada. Also CRNE is totally different than NCLEX and is only available in Canada 3 times a year. Can get permission to work temp in Canada whilst waiting to sit the exam but if you fail the exam issues will arise.

Are books available to study for the crne outside of canada or do you have to get them in canada?

You can order them but many have posted that postage is expensive. Just try searching for CRNE and see what comes up

how can i apply to a particular province?? didnt see much infos on the canadian immigration website.. thanks

There is a sticky with province websites in the Canadian forum, also if you google province name and nursing usually brings it up i.e. 'Nova Scotia nursing' then the province's website is usually in the top few

ok will google that. thanks so much

is CRNE = licensing process? I visited the canadian embassy website and did not find anything there regarding licensing.

CRNE = Canadian Registered Nurse Exam and the College of Registered Nurses for each province is actually the regulatory body that encompasses licensure which they actually call registration (ie) in BC that would be the College of Registered Nurses in British Columbia (CRNBC).

Have you tried the Canadian Nurses Association website? It has some good information.

Follow this URL to the CNAs page of links. These are all the provincial RN websites.

Hopefully it won't be too complicated! We need more nurses here!!

Would like to pursue a nursing career in Canada, but havent find "relevant" infos regarding applying there. Are there any hospitals that sponsor foreing nurses?

Will check the website you posted. thanks
