How to become a nurse

Published

Hello, i am currently a senior in highschool and have only recently started thinking about nursing. The problem is, the colleges i applied to do not seem to have the BSN major, (i applied to Univerisites of California) so im wondering is there something else you can major in and still become a nurse or does it have to be BSN? Thanks !!

Hilaryalas,

A BSN is not the only form of a nurse. You can become a nurse with an ADN, LPN, LVN, ASN, etc, etc. Although a BSN is recommended and would be more helpful in job searching, but you do not need it.

Hi! Some UCs (Irvine, UCLA) do have nursing. If you didn't apply/get into either of those, you should think about doing two years at CC and then transferring to wherever you can get into. Those two years will be spent doing GE and prerequisites like Anatomy and Physiology, Microbiology, Chemistry, social sciences, etc. You should start researching BSN programs in state now so you know what classes you need.

Unless you are dead-set on going to Uni, I would suggest attending a local Community College and getting all the pre-reqs out of the way. Those will be your 100 and 200 level classes, and usually include English, Math, A&P, Biology, Chemistry etc. Many Community Colleges also offer an ADN (Associates in Nursing) too - have a look at your local colleges to see what they offer. You could then head off to Uni to get your BSN with your ADN already completed, saving yourself a lot of $$ too!
