How do you apply for jobs out of state?

Published

I am looking to move to Texas, but have heard from several people that you will not get an interview if you are not physically in the state. Am I supposed to move there and sign a 12 month lease and play the waiting game for a job that may or may not open up? Arghhh

I would still apply for jobs. In the applications, you can state that you don't currently live in Texas but plan to relocate there in the very near future. One thing that may help you get interviews is if you get your Texas endorsement (if you don't already hold a compact license).

If you do get an interview, don't expect them to foot the bill for you to come out there--you will have to pay your own way. Or they may be willing to interview you by phone or Skype.

Another variable is that I have not taken the NCLEX yet...scheduled for next week. So will I have to wait for my current state - South Carolina (non compact) to issue the license, before I can apply for endorsement?

Appreciate the help!

I don't know the answer to that one, sorry--you may need to ask the Texas BON if you can apply for a license directly in their state or if you should endorse in.

I don't know for sure...but I think when we had our day where they broken down applying for the NCLEX and licensure and all that...you can apply for licensure for both SC and TX right now, rather than waiting on SC and then waiting for endorsement. I think. I know you don't have to even get a SC license and you can still test in SC. If you're sure you want to move to TX, skip the SC license and just go for TX.

That being said...I would not recommend relocating before you have a job. I just had a skype interview for an out of state position, that could be an option for you as well.

Yeah, definitely don't move here until you have a written job offer with a firm start date. The market is saturated. Definitely don't count on being flown in for interviews. If you do get one, it will be on your own nickel. Same with moving here - nobody pays relocation expenses with plenty of candidates who live here already. That being said, it is not unheard of for people from out of state to get selected for positions.

If SC is a compact state then getting your license changed to Texas after getting it in SC will be pretty smooth I would think. Check the Texas BON website or just give them a call. They are pretty nice on the phone.

I am currently in the exact same position. I am taking the NCLEX in June- the same month we are relocating to Houston for my husband's job. Now I am worried about my application not even getting looked at because I am a new grad from Oklahoma when there are all of these people from the area that have been working the entire time they are in school to get into these hospitals.

Im hoping people will at least look at my app whenI start applying considering I live out of state as well.

I currently attend school in OH and graduate in June. I already filled out my application for TX licensure and sent them my fingerprint card. Ive been planning to move to TX for about 4 years now, so it would suck to not be able to get a job there.

what about PCT?
