HOUSTON - GN Residency Info

Nurses Job Hunt

Published

I wanted to know if anyone knows the timing/availability of any of the GN programs in the Houston area. Very few hospital systems specifically state on their site when applications are open/due or how many times per year; it seems like a guessing game that you just have to check in on every day to see if it's there.

GN programs I'd be interested in:

**MDA (DREAM JOB, spent 2 semesters for clinicals here, was my original inspiration to become a nurse when I was 11 yrs old, oncology is the specialty I want to go into)

TCH

Memorial Hermann

Methodist

St. Luke's

Open to any recommendations!

*I live in downtown Houston as far as locations are concerned. My GPA is 3.05 (which auto rules out Methodist TMC and others with 3.2 reqs).

If anyone has other information regarding what the GN residency is actually like in terms of requirements, environment (nurse/pt ratio, PCA presence, etc.), pay, parking, scheduling, management, etc. that would also be tremendously helpful to get an inside perspective.

I want to know as much as possible beforehand; I really do not want to just work somewhere because they chose me. I want to work somewhere that I chose (if that makes sense; basically I am not blindly applying everywhere possible). I want to be happy where I work, not just tolerant.

Suggest you mosey on over to the Texas forum for more responses & info on new grad programs.

Sad fact of life - most TMC residency slots are filled in a very short time frame... some even before the formal application period is announced. BSN grads who have done their rotations in the facility have the inside track. You already know about the GPA standards.

But don't limit yourself to TMC facilities - Most of the TMC hospitals have numerous satellite tertiary facilities in the suburbs. Since you live downtown, you may even benefit from a 'reverse commute' in some locations that will cut down on traffic woes. Prolly not for the Katy freeway or I 45 (N or S) because they're busy both ways.
