I will be a new grad in May 2011 with my BSN and I have applied to a few residencies such as St. Luke's and Memorial Hermann, but I can't seem to find any of the other hospital's postings yet. Has anyone else been able to?
Ok, sorry for the late reply. Zippidy, ER was actually my first choice!!!! Lucky You! But IMU is my #2 and Pediatrics/ICU were tied for #3... so 2 outta 3 isn't bad!!! Princess Don't worry... you will!!!!!
Well, it was soooo stress and hassle free. I went there at 12:30 and the Critical Care Manager came and asked me a few questions. She asked me "why did you choose critical care?", "you have PALS and NRP, why are you interested in adults, not kids?", "Tell me about yourself" and she asked me a situational question.
The situational question was "What would you do if a 70 year old walked in with Hx of HTN, DM 2, and comes in with S/S of a stroke..." I answered by saying "Well, I would check ABCs, give oxygen, EKGs, and initiate thrombolytic therapy". (I'm ACLS certified too LOL). She smiled and said that's not wrong, but you are thinking wayyyy too much into it. The first thing would be to check blood sugar, since they could possibly be a non compliant diabetic. Basically she told me that as a critical nurse, it's important to start at the simple stuff before you get complex.
She then proceeded to tell me about the Residency program. She pretty much told me about what I would be doing, the classes I would take, the shifts, etc. She pretty much was talking as if I got the job already. She took me on a tour of the units.
I asked her a few questions also. I asked About how she manages her unit, how she motivates her staff, The nurse/physician relationship, etc.
The salary offer was based on nights, with my experience and certifications. Bring on more questions
