Houston Community College ADN Progam

Published

Hey, I'm going to HCC this year and transferring in a year worth of classes from another University. The ones that can go thro are Mirco (got a C), Intro to Psy (got a C), Both englishes (B and B+).

I haven't applied for the program and I missed the deadline (AUG 1st). (I still couldn't apply since I did not go to the session and the orientation [are there two of them? I thought you only need to go to the session not the orientation] did not test out of intermediate alegbra yet, took BIOL 1406 General Biology, BIOL 2401 A/P I yet. )

Thus, I am applying for the fall semester of 2011. While waiting for that, I plan to take in the first semester:

BIOL 1406 Gen Bio

PSYC 2301 Intro to Psy (trying to get an A)

BIOL 2420 Mirco (trying to get an A)

SPCH #3##

total: 14 hrs (full time)

In the 2ed semester:

BIOL 2401 A/P I

PSYC 2314 Human Growth / Development Life Span

(I heard my Spanish I (got a C) and II (working on it now, looking like a B) [both 4 hrs] can take Humanities/Fine Arts Elective [3hr])

total is 7 hrs IF the Humanities/FineArts counts

[However, I want to be a full time student for the 2ed semester, any suggestions? and I don't know if taking A/PII at the same time as A/P I is a good idea]

plan to take HESI during the 2ed semester to take Pharm and A/P II during the summer too.

then hopefully in 2012 fall I can be at Coleman HCC doing the rest of the RNSG classes

Is this all possible?

Also, is it true that if you aren't a full time student throughout your whole college career, you can not get fin aid? Since my 2ed semester is not 12 hrs, I do not know what to do.

Please Help. The people I've asked at HCC and emailed at Coleman couldn't help me.

I also can not go to the meeting until after my summer session is done.

Congrats! I'm starting HCC too at the end of the month.

i got in! Yay! Class starts in just a couple weeks :nurse:

Was reading your posts! Im so Happy for you!! Gives me hope!! I am also hoping for fall 2011...Please give me YOUR SUCCESSFUL advice! What do you think is the key to getting in? And let me know hoe the UT health science center program works? I heard that some nursing students can get early acceptance?!?! Have you heard how that works??

Ii am just now taking my prerequisites and skipped 1406, but now I'm a little scared.... Any advice?

Well have you started any of your sciences?? I decided to re take this course before doing any sciences in order to boost my chances of comprehension of micro and the a&p's... HCC nursing advisior recommend it...

can anyone tell me how hard it is to get into this program? I took my HESI today at HCCS...just for the heck of it...(no reviews or anything like that) and completed the whole thing in 114 minutes and 14 seconds

Scores as follows:

A&P 88

Math 88

Grammar 82

Reading 89.13

Average 86.78

What are my chances? I've completed all Pre Reqs (a year ago) & all non RNSG subjects as well (A's in A&P, Microbiology, Advanced Algebra, Life Span, Psychology), (B's in Art, English and the rest) No C's in any subjects. I would appreciate anyone who can enlighten me! :)

Congratulations! What was your HESI score & grades on pre/co-reqs? Just curious bc I want to know if my grades are good enough!

Out of my past experience, I would like to share the strategy I have used finally to get into the program. I have wasted my time and money as I was lost in the 'A' game, I meant the acceptance game. It could be easily avoided if I would have tried differently.

Here are some tips that will help hopefuls to get into nursing programs:

1. Donot only focus on your GPA, Try to get good grades like A's. Try not to repeat. Some schools like UT does not like repeats or withdraws.

2. Complete all of your pre-reqs and get Associate first if you do not have Bachelors. That way you would be exempt from TSI requirements.

3. Take all of your sciences at the end, that way they will be up to date. If I am not wrong, some institution do not accept science courses if they are older than 3 - 5 yrs, if you want to use then for BSN after completing your RN.

4. Take RNSG 1301 if college provides. Even though some Universities would not accept pharmacology from other institution as it is considered as upper division nursing course. You have nothing to loose taking this course again at the University because you will see pharmacology throughout the nursing program. As much as you practice pharmacology you will do good in NCLEX exam.

5. Most importantly, as soon as you finish your A&P take the HESI Test, that way it will be fresh in your brain. You will just need to refresh your memory by studying the guides. Use several guides from the library. Do not just depend on Evolve. Keep studying the Vocabulary when surfing the internet. Get a critical thinking for nursing and study that one if your Hesi require critical thinking portion.

6. Get a CNA licence and always have an active CPR. CNA certification shows your interest toward the program. This is your first step of Nursing.

7. Try to work or volunteer at Healthcare facilities even if it is PRN position. It will look good on your status and resume when applying for BSN.

6. Now, apply to several programs that is available and within in your choice list. Donot just count on one program. You will be putting yourself in huge risk. Apply for LVN, RN, BSN by using step by step method. You can proceed to nursing one step at a time or you may apply seperately, if you feel you are ready and complete.

7. Lastly, get used to with stress and time restraint. Stress will be your best friend for a while.

Hope this helps...:nurse: Good Luck!

I've been interested in the HCCS ADN program and am a student at HCC. I've just recently taken the HESI exam a week ago and passed with the necessary scores. DOes anyone know at what time frame they contact you to take the required PHARM class? Do they register you themselves or give you a choice?
