Wondering if anyone has input on the various hospitals in Columbus. My husband is in the process of interviewing for a job in Columbus and since I've never even been in Ohio I have no clue what the various hospitals are like. I'll be graduating from an RN program in December. I'd like to go somewhere with a good cardiac or ENT/Plastics/Trauma center, but really as a new grad I'm willing to do just about anything med-surg.
Oh, and any inside scoop about Columbus in general- like where's a good place to live in the city or the 'burbs- would be appreciated too!
Thanks!!

:balloons: hi jenrosie! welcome aboard here. :)
i used to live in columbus, oh years ago. i was there a few times for travel nurse assignments, and absolutely loved columbus! at that time, dublin was a good suburban area to live in, and the schools in dublin were supposed to be really good. i think the westside of columbus was the best during the time i lived there.
i worked at ohio state university hospital, and really enjoyed my time there. another hospital there is called riverside methodist, but i don't have any personal experience with that facility.
i wish you and your dh the best in your new hometown of columbus when that time comes. :)

Hi! I just went on 2 job interviews in Columbus last Friday. I am not too familiar with Columbus itself as I am relocating there from NYC but I am pretty familiar with the hositals since I did a lot of research. There is the Ohio Health System - OhioHealth.com, Mt. Carmel Health System - MountCarmelHealth.com, and the hospitals affiliated with Ohio State - MedicalCenter.OSU.Edu. And if you are interested in Peds - ColumbusChildrens.com, which is hopefully where I will be working. I am a NICU nurse so I can't tell which hospital is best for what you are looking for but at least you can check and see what jobs are available. Are you looking to buy a house or rent?

Hi all!!
I grad from Ohio State last June! I am getting my masters in nursing here in Cincinnati but have lots of imput about columbus!!
Columbus is a very nice city, its clean and has some very nice night life, things to do etc. If you want to live close to the OSU campus but not too close, ie dont want students living next door consider moving to Grandview, I lived there last year and I absolutely LOVED it! its about 5 minutes away from the campus but yet oddly disconnected! Grandview ave is one of those picture perfect places with little coffee shops where people bring their dogs and just sit and relax, it has little shops and great restaurants! Dublin is nice suburb but kind of generic. I also livied on the south west side and didnt care for it all to much, although I had some friends who lived in a very nice suburb who loved it. Also BExley is a very nice classy neighborhood with very good schools, its very close to the campus and to Mt Carmel hospitals. I would not reccomend working at Riverside as everytime ive been there it was understaffed and dirty. It was an awful experience. Grant Riverside hospital downtown is a nice facility but OSU hospital is the best in my opinion.
Any specific questions about Columbus just email me! [email protected]

I have never seen anything like the political foot dragging at the hospitals as I have seen here in Columbus. I personnaly cannot wait to move after my last one graduates high school.
I think the OSU campus are stinks/I am a home care nurse and it is most definately a high crime area.
Columbus number of murders is raising to match other high crime cities.
I cannot wait to leave here. Been here 8 years.
I have heard similar stories about staffing ratios at Ohio Health.

i have never worked in a a COlumbus hospital but the last time I was a patient at riverside hospital, I was in the ER and there was dried blood and something sticky all over the floor, ew...the nurses were soo rude and didnt care that i was going through some huge health issues...(i had a miscarriage) the hustled around me and paid no attention to my questions...it was all new to me....it was awful...for months after that they harrassed me to pay a bill that i had turned into my insurance at least 5 times!! they just kept calling and threatening to turn me into collections when every time i gave them the necc. info...ugh..awful..and yeah its crazy how many murders there were last year..those poor students on south campus that was so awful...
Funny you should mention that as I just had lunch today with a nurse from Riverside and she mentioned and agreed with your post to the T.

I like Columbus. I've lived here on and off for most of my life. I always seem to come back here
I personally like Riverside, but I have most of my experience in the L&D/Perinatal/NICU areas as a patient/parent. I currently work at Children's, which if you want NICU, is the place to be (though Children's administrates Riverside's NICU) Grant is also a good hospital for trauma and such, but it is downtown.
As for living, it largely depends on whether you have kids or not and whether you'll need schools and if there are any special needs involved. Most of the north side (anything above Campus - Clintonville, Worthington, Westerville, Dublin, Lewis Center) are decent and have good school systems (except Clintonville). Bexley has fabulous schools, but insanely high taxes and very expensive homes. There are good parochial and private schools in the area if you want to go that route and live in Clintonville, Sharon Township or some other area that has Columbus city schools. Avoid the south side, unless you are moving to German Village....even then, I'd say avoid the south side. Typically.....avoid the west side too. Hilliard isn't too bad, but it's struggling with growth issues.
I love working at children's. It is in a bad neighborhood, but they have excellent security now (though sadly was not always the case ) and you should never have to walk from a parking lot to the hospital - they encourage the escort van or going in groups. The area in general is improving due to urban revitalization as well.
I've rambled enough, but Columbus can be a good place to live, IMO.
Very nice post about Children's. I have done home care for some time in that area and your right/not after dark/alone. Very nice people. I wanted to work there on the BMT unit but life got in the way, I should say my kids problems got in the way/ LOL and I missed the opportunity.
I am glad your happy here.
Westerville taxes are way to high to in my opinion. Our property tax has more than doubled, two school levies and another one on the baller, more, more and more .. LOL. Such is life. Good schools are not cheap. We still have the drug problems like everyone, bomb threats and such. scarey times we live in.
How is Children's BMT unit coming along anyway?

Hi :)
I'm a nursing student at OSU in Columbus. Here's a link for the university hospital's job link: http://www.medicalcenter.osu.edu/jobs/ They also just finished building the Ross Heart Hospital, since you said you were interested in cardiac. From the link you can connect to all the hospitals on campus, I think there's at least 5, plus 3 or 4 within a 10-15 minute drive from campus.

Ohio Health includes Riverside/Grant/Doctors
Mount Carmel has West/East/St. Annes
OSU has Ross heart/james Cancer/Harding, and many others I believe
Grant is level one trauma, but they don't get much heart, Riverside gets most of Ohio Health's heart, i believe is level 2 trauma, but i've never been to their Er's so i can't speak for that
Mount Carmel i have never been to any of their hospitals but i've heard bad things about pt staffing ratios
If you're leaning towards heart OSU's new Ross Heart I've heard many good things about, but have no personal experience there
