whats a good excuse for being late to work? how should i go about this?

Wait until the very last second to call in saying your cat has a hair ball stuck in its throat and you'll be late because you have to save kitty from an early, tragic death.
Why not tell current employer now that you have an appointment Monday and may be late but will be there ASAP. If you tell them now, maybe they or you can make arrangements to cover you until you get there. They don't need to know its for an interview.
Besides, the interview may not take long and you might not even be late. I would not call out or just show up late, but that's just me.

I agree with enuf_already...the hairball stuck in the cats throat is the best excuse ever!
In all seriousness though, I would just say you have an appointment and will be running late. Go ahead and tell your employer now so whoever you are relieving will be prepared to potentially stay over for a few minutes.

Personally, I would NEVER call ahead days early to give a 'heads up'. You could have a REALLY pricky unaccommodating boss to hassle you.
I'd just call out close to leaving time and say "I'd be late. Something came up, but I'll make it in".
Just remember NCIS Gibbs' rule - 'always be specific when you lie'. Just so you don't trip yourself up. As for the reason - keep it short & simple! & specific.
