Hospice CNA seeking answers!!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everyone!

I'm a CNA for Hospice and have been for about a year now. Im 19 years old and ive been a cna since i was 17. At first the job was going great but now it seems im getting called into the "office" for facilities saying im doing things wrong. they seem to forget i have ONE HOUR with each patient and i cant do all ADL's in 45min!!! (15min for paperwork). My question is this.. The patients i get up in the morning, if it is not their shower day, do they get a bed bath or a full bath on the toilet or just a good washing of the face and other parts as needed? I THOUGHT that a bedbath was only really in need if they are soiled or smell of soiled clothes, or anything of that sort or if there shower is days away? One of my nurses AKA my mother:nurse: called me and told me every patient i get up gets a bedbath if it is not their shower day. thats alot of freaking bedbaths. I think shes wrong, shes just trying to make herself look good because i am a reflection of her. but hey if im wrong, ill eat my words.

I think a good wipe down focusing on key areas such as the peri-area is needed daily. I think you've got the right idea. soiled or not, even if they had a shower the day before. Try to give your bedridden patients at least partial bed baths daily, and make sure you wash that back of theirs! and some lotion and powder too, being a CNA is an enormous amount of work and i respect you so much for doing this job. :) :balloons:

When I was a 19 year old nurses aide (that would be waaayyyy back before there was an actual certification - LOL) I was taught to do a P.T.A. bath on everyone, every day. I still teach new aides to do the same. I would want someone to do the same for me. It should go without saying that this would also include hands and face before doing the PTA

I was always taught to give a bed bath when i was a cna, as i think this is appropriate on a daily basis for all your patients your mother is right. But it's not as bad as it sounds if they're in bed it's quite easy if they're a one assist , if they're sitting on the toliet that's even better. Good luck

Each Hospice patient should have a care plan that is begun on admission. It should be updated each cert period for the CNA. Look at each patient's care plan and do what the POC says.
