Hey guys. I had the most horrendous night last night. Unfortunately, we have 24 visiting hours (that's a whole other topic!). I have this patient who always has at least 2 visitors, and they are always very needy and pushy. Well last night around midnight, one of them asked if they could get some soda. Now, this visitor was a male probably no older than 25. I told him where the nearest machine was. He replied, "Isn't that your job to get me that?!! :angryfire" I told him no, I was here for my 8 pts to look after.
Well, about an hour later the call light for that room came on. I went in and the patient needed help to the bathroom and the rude visitor was saying goodbye..he was leaving. Right as he was leaving he said, "thanks for nothing" towards me and tossed his *full* cup of soda in the trashcan near where I was standing, and all the soda splashed on me and was running down my scrub bottoms. He saw what happened, burst out laughing, and left the room. I was infuriated! I felt like doing something, but I didn't know what to do. It's not really a crime or anything, but Im trying to think if i should get this visitor banned from the floor. Any suggestions?
That person was just plain ignorant...Im wondering though why hospitals changed their policies about visitors. I can understand 24 hr visitors for L & D or peds but why the other floors? It sounds like it is causing more harm then good.Hey guys. I had the most horrendous night last night. Unfortunately, we have 24 visiting hours (that's a whole other topic!). i'm wondering what the patient had to say about the visitor's behavior!
i agree with everyone who told you to write up an incident report. it's too late to call security, probably, but with an incident report if this person repeats the behavior with another nurse, there will at least be documentation that it wasn't an isolated incident.
and kudoes to the original poster for not fetching snacks and sodas for the visitors! honestly, i think if every single nurse informed the family that they were here for the patient and not to fetch for the visitors, perhaps the visitors would get the message and stop asking. it's when some nurses do them favors, the first nurse who doesn't suddenly becomes "the bad nurse." it's unfair to set up our colleagues for that sort of good nurse/bad nurse comparison!
Oh and next time this BOY comes in let him know that you would be happy to get him the soda...then spit in it. JUST KIDDING but it sounds good :)
That would be sooo cool ...This kid would deserve that too! Used to work in food service in Washington D.C. All kinds of arrogant and RUDE Capitol Hill and US Government employees all wanting everything NOW NOW NOW and then moaning and complaining that their Big Mac was too hot. "Let stand for 5 minutes and in the meantime stuff yourself to death with french fries and your diet coke". I used to get such a kick out of people who would order the most fattening foods and then have a diet coke...like the diet coke is really gonna help to save yourself after eating 4 bigmacs.
